Match Overview: Week 3

There are many interesting games coming up next weekend. We can enjoy important matches in our Belgian league, the Bundesliga and the Africa Cup. Read below for a breakdown of competitions you should look forward to.

Friday

In the Africa Cup, the international football championship for the African continent, Cameroon will play their second match against Senegal. Cameroon played a surprising draw against small Guinea on January 15. This meant they had a less good start than they had hoped for in advance. They will play against title-holder Senegal on Friday, January 19. They got off to a better start than Cameroon, winning 3-0 against Gambia. This immediately took them a two-point lead over both Cameroon and Guinea. The winner immediately determines the leader in group C. Can Cameroon immediately dethrone the title holder?

Saturday

Cercle Brugge can try to get into the top 6 of the Jupiler Pro League against KRC Genk. The Association has had an excellent first half of the season, entering the winter break in 7th place in the rankings. And KRC Genk is also doing very well, it is currently in 4th place in the Jupiler Pro League. With three points for Cercle, the two clubs would be on equal terms.

The number 1 in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen, will visit RB Leipzig on Saturday. The season could hardly be going better for the players from Leverkusen: after 17 games they retain 45 points. In their last 5 games they have only drawn twice, against Stuttgart and Dortmund. Things are going a little less smoothly for RB Leipzig, but they are still in a good 4th place with 33 points. Leverkusen would be more than happy to increase their lead over Bayern Munich, because with four points more and one more match played, the lead cannot be bridged. RB Leipzig feels the hot breath of BVB Dortmund.

Westerlo has been able to kick itself out of the relegation zone, but how long can it keep that up? They can try their luck against Club Brugge on Saturday. The people of Bruges only drew twice in their previous 5 matches, against Union and Mechelen. Westerlo has lasted four games without defeat, and also played a surprising draw against Antwerp. With three points, the Gamecocks would immediately finish 2 places higher. Club Brugge only beats Genk with 3 extra points.

Sunday

Morocco plays against Congo-Kinshasa on Sunday. In the first round of this group stage of the African Cup of Nations, all teams are trying to get off to a good start. If their Africa Cup goes as well as their World Cup this year, Walid Regragui, Hakim Ziyech, Achraf Hakimi and the rest of the team shouldn’t worry too much. Morocco is therefore the favorite in Group F, but it should not be too lax. Their first opponent is Congo-Kinshasa. They play with, among others, Joris Kayembe, who played two caps for the Red Devils.

Three points would not immediately save OHL from the relegation zone, but it would help them on their way. On Sunday they play against Anderlecht, which is in second place in the Jupiler Pro League. So it seems almost an impossible task for the people of Leuven, but in football you never know. If Leuven can pull off a cup stunt against Antwerp, it might also take courage from that for this match. Les Mauves first play against leader Union in the Croky Cup. In the Duden Park it will then be decided whether Anderlecht can finally beat their neighbors again.

A match in the Jupiler Pro League between RWDM and Eupen concludes this weekend. Last Wednesday, RWDM were eliminated in the Croky Cup by second division side Oostende. In the Jupiler Pro League, it currently has 5 points ahead of OHL and 6 ahead of Eupen, and would immediately jump to 8th place with a win and 3 points. Eupen must try to prevent that. The club from German-speaking Belgium would not immediately be able to jump out of the relegation zone, but points are always welcome.
