Belgian Teams in the Round of 16
In the various European club competitions, we are now fully into the round of 16. Two Belgian teams are still competing in these competitions for a spot in the next round. Below is an overview of the matches in this knockout phase of the tournaments. Who has a chance at a European title?
Conference League
The first Belgian team to take the field during these round of 16 matches is Club Brugge. This club, coached by Ronny Deila, won their previous match 3-1 against Bodo/Glimt, securing a 6-point lead in Group D. In the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, Club Brugge is currently in 3rd place, behind Union and Anderlecht. They face competition from several clubs trailing by 5 points.
The other Belgian team is Union. The Jupiler Pro League leaders proved their strength last week by defeating Club Brugge in the Croky Cup. The Brussels-based club appears almost unbeatable, with 28 wins and only 2 losses in the JPL. Their last defeat dates back to November 9, when they dropped points against LASK Linz in the Europa League group stage. In the meantime, they have drawn several times against various teams, both domestically and internationally. The Unionistes advanced to the next round by defeating Germany’s Frankfurt.
Club Brugge was drawn against Molde, a Norwegian club. That team finished 3rd in Group H in the Europa League, thus moving to the Conference League. Molde is currently in 9th place in the Norwegian Eliteserien. Union will face Fenerbahce this week. In the Turkish Süper Lig, Fenerbahce is only behind Galatasaray by two points, with several games remaining, leaving much room for possibility.
The other remaining teams in the Conference League will play their matches on Thursday, March 7. These are:
- Sturm Graz vs LOSC
- Olympiakos vs Maccabi Tel-Aviv
- Ajax vs Aston Villa
- Servette vs Viktoria Pilsen
- Dinamo Zagreb vs PAOK
- Maccabi Haifa vs Fiorentina
The return legs will be played next week, on Thursday, March 14.

Union initially played in the Europa League but had to bow out to Liverpool and Toulouse. No Belgian team remains in the Europa League. This week, almost all matches in this competition are played on Thursday, March 7, except for the one between Sporting CP and Atalanta, which takes place a day earlier, on Wednesday, March 6.
The following matches are all played on Thursday, March 7:
- Roma vs Brighton
- Sparta Prague vs Liverpool
- Qarabag vs Leverkusen
- Milan vs Slavia Prague
- Freiburg vs West Ham
- Benfica vs Rangers
- Marseille vs Villarreal
Once again, all return legs are played on Thursday, March 14.
