Friday, March 8th
KV Mechelen has been on a very good streak for a while now, with a recent victory against Cercle Brugge. Last fall, Malinwa had to fight to avoid relegation, but currently, they are only three points away from the 5th place. This success is mainly due to coach Besnik Hasi, who succeeded Steven Defour as coach. KV Mechelen plays on Friday at their own AFAS Stadion against Westerlo. The Kemphanen are still in 11th place in the Belgian domestic league. In the last 5 matches, they only managed to win once. In ‘t Kuipje, they won 2-1 against Standard a few weeks ago. They did manage to draw in Brussels against leader Union.
Saturday, March 9th
A day later, defending champion Antwerp plays an important match at the Guldensporenstadion in Kortrijk. For the Great Old, a top 5 finish is almost certain, but they still feel the pressure from Cercle Brugge, Genk, and Gent. Even KV Mechelen still has a chance to catch up. And with another match against leader Union looming, they better pick up some points against KV Kortrijk. That team is currently in last place in the JPL, but they have surprised a few times. They recently drew against Club Brugge and won against Standard.
Cercle Brugge dropped points against KV Mechelen but can still rise through matches against Charleroi and RWDM. On Saturday, they play against Charleroi. This Walloon club is just outside the relegation zone, with only a 2-point lead over OHL. That’s why it’s important for them to pick up some points in their last two matches. For Cercle, it’s important to stay in the top 6. With 43 points, they are just below Antwerp, and on par with Genk and Gent.
Also in the Jupiler Pro League, we have a Brussels derby between RWDM and Anderlecht. Les Mauves cannot catch up with Union anymore, nor can they drop any further. However, that doesn’t mean they will let RWDM walk all over them. It promises to be an interesting match because the players from Molenbeek also hope to pull themselves out of the relegation zone. In their last 5 matches, they haven’t won a single time, not even against the last-placed KV Kortrijk. Their last victory dates back to December 16th when they won 3-0 against STVV at home.
Sunday, March 10th
Genk tries to maintain or even improve their position in 6th place, but it won’t be easy. On Sunday, they face Standard, which, despite some defeats, was able to defeat Gent again. The Liège players are currently in 10th place. Nevertheless, they certainly have a chance because Genk has also dropped some points lately. Apart from wins against Charleroi and RWDM, they haven’t won in their last five matches against Club Brugge and Union.
Also on Sunday, Manchester City plays at Anfield in Liverpool. This match is between the two leaders in the English Premier League and will directly determine who temporarily takes the top spot. The two teams are only separated by one point. Both teams also have a very good streak in the league, with Liverpool going four games without a draw or loss and Manchester City winning the last three matches. An important match in this streak was the Manchester derby, which the Citizens won 3-1. City also plays a Champions League match against Copenhagen on Wednesday, March 6th.
For Gent, a difficult hurdle awaits them on the road to the top 5 this weekend. The Buffalos face leader Union. With a recent defeat against Standard last week, Gent hasn’t had the best preparation, but who knows, Tarik Tissoudali or Hugo Cuypers might still score goals. Union has only failed to win once in their last five matches. They drew against Westerlo at their own Joseph Marienstadion on February 10th. So, the Unionistes will certainly want to take all three points and extend their lead over Anderlecht.
