Football in Europe never stops, and exciting matches await us every week. This weekend, there are again many interesting games on the schedule. Across Europe, the best teams are competing this week for the top positions in the final stages of the league and for tickets to European football. Read on to find out which matches you definitely shouldn’t miss.
Friday, March 29
In Belgian football, the teams are starting the playoffs this weekend. One of those matches is between KAA Gent and Standard Liège. They are playing in the Europe Playoffs, aiming for a ticket to European football. Gent finished just outside the top 6 in the regular season, missing out on the Champion’s Playoffs. However, they start these Europe Playoffs at the top of the ranking. The Buffaloes need to build a sufficient lead over KV Mechelen, who are just one point behind. Standard still needs to collect a lot of points, as they have 17 points, 7 fewer than Gent. Standard also feels the pressure from Westerlo and OHL, who both have only 2 points less.

In Italy, they are at matchday 30 out of 38 this week. Italian teams still have a few games to play, but the end of the season in Serie A is approaching. On Saturday, Napoli and Atalanta will kick off this matchday. Both teams would love to be in the top 5, as that would secure them a European ticket. Atalanta currently sits in 6th place with 47 points, 4 fewer than AS Roma. Napoli, on the other hand, is 2 points behind Atalanta. So, both teams can do themselves a favor by winning this match and getting closer to the top 5.
In the German Bundesliga, they are now at matchday 27 out of 34. In this league, Bayern Munich is almost certain of a top 5 spot, but Dortmund has less of a lead. Bayern Munich, the Rekordmeister, wants to finish ahead of Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen currently leads with 10 points more than Munich. For Dortmund, it’s crucial to stay in the top 5 and maybe even climb a few places.
In the Belgian championship round, the Champion’s Playoffs, all eyes will be on the match between Anderlecht and Antwerp. The ‘Great Old’ is currently in 3rd place, 6 points behind Anderlecht. That’s still feasible to catch up, but they need to win at least 2 matches. Perhaps they can do that in this direct duel, but Anderlecht won’t easily let themselves be overtaken. The Mauves need just 3 points to draw level with Union and maybe ultimately win the title.
Sunday, March 31
We are also approaching the final stages in the English Premier League. On Sunday, we have an important match between Liverpool and Brighton. Liverpool is currently in second place, tied on points with leader Arsenal. Therefore, Liverpool really wants to win and take a slight lead over their rival. Brighton could move up one place with three points, between Manchester United and West Ham. Otherwise, they might be overtaken by teams like Wolverhampton or Newcastle.
In the Premier League, Manchester City also has a chance to take the lead. With 63 points, the Cityzens are currently in third place, just one point behind Arsenal and Liverpool. So, they could potentially take the top spot after this matchday. Especially because they play a direct duel against leader Arsenal this weekend. Arsenal has been performing well, winning their last 5 matches, but they mustn’t get too complacent. With Liverpool and Manchester City looming, they could quickly drop down the ranks.
And in France, Marseille faces a tough challenge against PSG. The team from Paris dominates French football and is 12 points ahead at the top. Marseille can’t catch up to them, but they do want to finish in the top 5 and secure a European ticket. With currently 4 points behind Lille and Nice, who are in 4th and 5th place respectively, that’s definitely possible.
