The major European domestic leagues are about to kick off the 2024-2025 season. It’s high time to get everything in order. Both in England and France, the domestic league starts on Friday, August 16, while in Spain, they begin a day earlier. Serie A follows last with its first match on Saturday, August 17. Premier League
The English league begins its season on Friday, August 16. Over a period of 282 days from this week until Sunday, May 25, 2025, the battle will be fierce once again for one of the most coveted titles in modern football. A total of 380 matches will be played to determine which of the 20 clubs will earn this title. Manchester City aims to become the first team in history to win the title five times in a row, but there are also European spots up for grabs.
Manchester City is once again the biggest contender for the title. Pep Guardiola’s team is packed with talent and consistently delivers a high level of football. Two years ago, they dominated both domestically and in Europe, making them a formidable opponent. Additionally, Arsenal also stands a good chance: Mikel Arteta’s team finished just two points behind Manchester City last year and will be eager to improve on that.
Ligue 1
Paris Saint-Germain will once again defend the French title this year. The reigning champion also won in 2022 and 2023. Like in England, the first match will be played on Friday, August 16, and the winner will be announced on May 22, 2025.
It’s no surprise that Paris Saint-Germain is once again the frontrunner to claim the title. The Parisians will be defending their title for the third consecutive time against the best French teams. However, this year, they will have to do it without Kylian Mbappé, who moved to Real Madrid at the beginning of the summer. There aren’t many real challengers, although Lille OSC and AS Monaco were the only two teams in the last 10 years that managed to keep PSG from the title.
La Liga
Athletic Bilbao and Getafe will kick off the Spanish domestic league on Thursday, August 15. A day later, we’ll immediately get an exciting match between Valencia and Barcelona, and the day after that, Kylian Mbappé will play his first official match for Real Madrid. The teams will compete over 38 matchdays, with the winner being crowned on May 25.
As in England, there are two main contenders for the title: Real Madrid and Barcelona. Los Blancos from Madrid won the title again last year, their 36th in history, and also secured the UEFA Champions League title. Barcelona is traditionally Real Madrid’s biggest rival, as was evident from last season’s final standings. Only Girona seemed to be on a good track for a while, but they ultimately finished 4 points behind second-placed Barcelona.
Serie A
In Italy, they start the new season last. Genoa and Inter Milan will kick off the new season on Saturday, August 17, which will conclude on May 25, 2025. Inter Milan managed to claim the national championship for the 20th time last year, but that doesn’t guarantee they’ll do it again this year.
The year before, in 2023, Napoli surprisingly won the title again, their third in history. This broke a small streak of victories by Juventus, Inter, and AC Milan. Juventus also holds the record with 36 championship titles and is the most successful club domestically with 11 titles. But of course, there are also European spots up for grabs this season, and several Italian teams have performed very well. For instance, Atalanta won the Europa League last year, while Fiorentina also made it to the final.
