Week 37: European football weekend preview

European Football Weekend Preview: Week 37

At the end of this week, we will once again have a packed football calendar. Not only in Belgium but also in Spain and Italy, players will be active. This week, we can once again enjoy the best football on European soil. This article lists the most interesting matches of the European football weekend preview for you.

Friday, September 13 (Dender – Standard Liege)

As a newly promoted team, Dender is already causing a surprise: after 6 games, they are at the top of the Jupiler Pro League standings. The club from Denderleeuw drew in their opening match against Union Saint-Gilles, followed by victories over Gent, Kortrijk, and Beerschot. These results allowed them to take the top spot, although Anderlecht has the same number of points with one game less played. If Dender wants to keep the lead as long as possible, points against Standard will certainly be welcome. The team from Liège managed to secure a spot in the European Play-offs last year but had to settle for last place. They, too, will be eagerly looking for those crucial points.

Saturday, September 14 (Real’s Derby)

A day later, Southampton faces Manchester United. Southampton has plenty of reasons for revenge against Manchester’s ‘Red Devils,’ as 3 years ago, the Saints suffered a crushing 9-0 defeat. A result that some say has not yet been forgotten. A victory would also do wonders for Manchester United: after a disappointing season, they are currently sitting in 14th place after 3 matchdays. Last year, United finished in 8th place, 31 points behind title-winners and city rivals Manchester City.

On the same day, a ‘Real derby’ takes place in Spain: Real Sociedad welcomes Real Madrid to the Estadio Anoeta. Both of these royal teams have a long history in Spanish football, but there are also many differences. Real Madrid holds the record with 36 Primera Division titles, while Real Sociedad has only 2 to its name. Last year, Real Madrid deepened the gap with Real Sociedad to 14 points after a victory, with 5 matchdays left.

With a win over AC Milan, Venezia can pull off an upset and move up from 19th to 8th place in the rankings. The team from Venice returned to the top tier of Italian football after a year in Serie B and now has the chance to make a significant leap forward. AC Milan, by their standards, is underperforming: with a loss to Parma and draws against Torino and Lazio, they currently sit in 14th place. Yet, with that, we only start the European football weekend preview!

Sunday, September 15 (Girona – Barcelona)

In Belgium, Antwerp and Union fought for the league title last year, but at the start of this season, both teams have fallen behind. Antwerp sits in 11th place with 2 wins, 3 losses, and a draw. Union is doing slightly better with 2 wins and 3 draws, placing them in 8th. It’s high time for both teams to collect points and rejoin the top. After last season’s success, a comeback can be expected from both sides.

In Spain, after 4 matchdays, Barcelona is comfortably at the top of La Liga. The top club has won all their matches so far, while their biggest rival, Real Madrid, had to settle for two draws. This gives Barcelona a four-point lead over Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Villarreal. Just behind them is this week’s opponent, Girona. Last year, these two teams were still fighting for the league title, with 5 matches left, as they occupied second and third place.

For the final match, we head back to Italy, where Inter Milan will try to defend their top spot against Monza. Currently, after 3 matches, Inter is level with Juventus, Torino, and Udinese. Internazionale will do everything they can to secure a small lead. For Monza, a small football club from Lombardy that has never won a league title, Inter Milan is a tough opponent. Monza will be trying to stay out of the relegation zone from their current 15th place. What a weekend waits ahead for us!? Did you like our European football weekend preview?
