Preview: NHL 2024-2025

NHL

The new NHL season is just around the corner, and fans around the world are gearing up for an exciting year of top-level ice hockey. If you’re unfamiliar: NHL stands for ‘National Hockey League,’ and it’s the premier ice hockey league in Canada and the United States. There were plenty of transfers this summer, so the season promises to be thrilling once again. Read all about it in this article.

NHL

The National Hockey League is the highest professional ice hockey league in North America, with teams from both the United States and Canada. The NHL consists of 32 teams that compete in a regular season and playoffs. The goal of each team is to win the Stanley Cup, the oldest and most prestigious trophy in ice hockey. The Stanley Cup is awarded to the team that wins the playoffs. Last year, that was the Florida Panthers, after they defeated the Edmonton Oilers.

The upcoming season will be the 108th edition of this competition and starts on October 4th. On the first day, the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils will face off in Prague, Czech Republic, as part of the NHL Global Series. The Stanley Cup playoffs are expected to begin in April 2025, with the finals taking place in June.

Favorites

The Florida Panthers are the reigning champions after their victory in the 2024 Stanley Cup final, where they claimed their first-ever Cup in history. With this achievement, they have solidified their place among the NHL elite. With star players like Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov leading the way, Florida enters the 2024-2025 season with the goal of defending their title.

The Vegas Golden Knights head into the season with confidence, having won their first Stanley Cup in 2023. The Golden Knights still boast a strong team, with key players such as Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, and goalie Adin Hill, who all played crucial roles in their successful playoff run. They are certainly one of the favorites to make another deep playoff push.

Colorado Avalanche, the 2022 champions, are also a dangerous contender this year. With players like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, they still have one of the most dynamic teams in the league. Colorado is hoping to avoid injuries this year, as they struggled with that last season. If they can stay healthy, they have a strong chance of competing for the Cup again.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs remain strong contenders as well. Carolina boasts one of the most complete rosters in the NHL, with an excellent balance between offensive power, led by players like Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, and a rock-solid defense. However, the big question is whether they can finally take the next step to win the Stanley Cup, something they have narrowly missed out on for years.

Toronto remains a team under intense pressure. After years of playoff disappointments, and despite the immense talent in their roster with stars like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, the Leafs continue to struggle to meet high expectations. Following some key changes in their team, including defensive improvements, this is a critical year for Toronto to finally capture the elusive Stanley Cup.

Teams Under Pressure

Several teams are under enormous pressure to perform in 2024-2025. One of the most talked-about teams is the Edmonton Oilers, last season’s runner-up. They arguably have the best player in the world, Connor McDavid, along with his teammate Leon Draisaitl. Despite this talent, they have come up short in the playoffs in recent years, with last year being their biggest chance. Time is running out for Edmonton to lead this generation to a championship. This season could be decisive for the future of this team, or players might start looking for transfers.

The Boston Bruins are also in an interesting position. After their record-breaking 2022-2023 season, where they won the President’s Trophy but were disappointingly eliminated in the first round, the team is in transition. A year ago, they had to say goodbye to icons like Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, so the Bruins need to reinvent themselves. Last season, they were knocked out by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers in the second round of the playoffs.
