Preview: EURO 2024 Qualifiers

EURO2024Qualifiers

The final match days in the qualifications for the 2024 European Championship in Germany are almost upon us. In the next two weeks, we can already enjoy European international football, in which our Red Devils can also excel. While they are already assured of an EC ticket, many countries are not yet.

Group A

Spain and Scotland can already celebrate, as they are both already qualified for the EC. Erling Haaland’s Norway could still have a shot at a place in the EC on Sunday night, but the Spaniards were too big an obstacle. As a result, the Norwegians no longer have a chance to qualify, as they have only one match to go and Spain and Scotland both have five points more. For Georgia and Cyprus, advancing was already out of the question for some time.

So the next matches are mainly a battle between Spain and Scotland for first place. On Thursday night, 16 November, they will both play a match, against Cyprus and Georgia respectively. On the 10th matchday, Spain will then play another match against Georgia, while Scotland duel against Norway.

Group B

France are playing a flawless course, and were already sure of a place at the EC after their win against the Netherlands on 13 October. The same Netherlands must wait and see with fear, as they have as many points as Greece, but one match less. A win against Ireland or Gibraltar, who no longer stand a chance of winning a ticket, should suffice.

They will get an immediate chance to do so on Saturday, November 18. That’s when the Netherlands play Ireland, while France meet tiny Gibraltar. If things don’t work out for the Dutch then, they will get a second chance on Tuesday, November 21, when they meet Gibraltar. France and Greece also play each other on the same day.

Group C

Also in this group, only one team is still sure of their ticket to EURO 2024: England did not play a perfect course, but is still in a secure position against second-place Ukraine. That country poses a solid hurdle for Italy, which also needs at least 3 points to advance. The Squadra will play a match against the Ukrainians on the final matchday. That will determine who gets to go with them to Germany.

But first, the Italians still play Northern Macedonia, on Friday 17 November. A win would go a long way to helping them, but not yet immediately ensure a ticket. England play Malta on the same day. On Monday 20 November, we then get the duel between Ukraine and Italy, at the same time England plays against North Macedonia.

Group D

Turkey is the first country from this group to secure a ticket. The country has six points more than Wales and Croatia, who are in second and third place respectively. It will be very difficult for Armenia to move up even higher, with Latvia having no chance.

Wales must first come out against Armenia, on Saturday 18 November. On the same day, Latvia and Croatia also play a duel. On the final matchday, Wales and Turkey still play each other, and Croatia may still seek points against Armenia.

Group E

The points are close in this group, although Albania have the best chance of clinching a ticket. They are two points ahead of the Czech Republic, with two matches to go. Poland have only one match to go, so they will have to put their best foot forward if they still want a chance of being through. Moldova also still has a chance, but they must be able to win their next matches against Albania and the Czech Republic. That seems an almost impossible task.

But they will try, with the first match on Friday 17 November: that’s when they will meet Albania. A few hours later, Poland will take their last chance to move up the table against the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic will also play Moldova on Monday 20 November, when Albania conclude their campaign against the Faroe Islands.

Group F

The Red Devils could already qualify for the EC on 13 October, when they won from direct rival Austria 2-3. For the Austrians it turned out not to be too big a blow, as they too could qualify a few days later after winning in Azerbaijan. The same Azerbaijan still creates a small hurdle for Belgium, as the Red Devils need to win over the country to become group winners. Otherwise, Austria can still claim that spot if they win against Estonia.

First, Azerbaijan and Sweden play a match on Thursday, November 16. At the same time, Austria kicks off in Estonia. On 19 November, it is then Belgium’s turn, they host Azerbaijan at the King Baudouin Stadium. At the same time, Sweden will play another match against Estonia.

Group G

Again, no one is certain yet, but it looks like Hungary and Serbia will come out on top. Montenegro still has a small chance of cashing in a ticket, but they still need to win against Lithuania and Hungary. Lithuania and Bulgaria no longer have a chance of winning another ticket.

Hungary can already increase their lead on Thursday (16 November). A few hours later, Montenegro will take on Lithuania. On 19 November, we get the duel between Hungary and Montenegro, while Serbia plays against Bulgaria.

Group H

Slovenia and Denmark seem almost certain of a place at the EC, but Kazakhstan also still have a chance. Finland still fought fiercely, but they no longer get above the leaders. For Northern Ireland and San Marino, the tournament was already settled for some time.

Kazakhstan may immediately get some points against San Marino on Friday, November 17. Finland and Northern Ireland also play a match on the same day. The leaders also come to play on that day, battling it out in Copenhagen. Northern Ireland hosts Denmark on Monday 20 November, Finland plays San Marino and Slovenia gets to play one last time against Kazakhstan.

Group I

Romania is in the lead in this group, closely followed by Switzerland, which has just one point less and also has one more match to play. Israel and Kosovo also still have a chance, but they would have to win almost every one of their next matches. For Belarus and Andorra, a ticket is out of reach.

Israel plays Switzerland first on Wednesday 15 November. After that, it’s up to Belarus and Andorra, who play a game on Saturday, November 18. On the same day, Switzerland plays against Kosovo and Israel against Romania. On the final day, 21 November, we get a fixture between the two leaders. Then Israel will also play against Andorra, and Kosovo against Belarus.

Group J

For Portugal, the ticket seemed a certainty for some time. After their win against Slovakia on 13 October, they are definitely sure of a place in Germany. That Slovakia are also very close to making it to the next round, one point is enough to secure the ticket. If they fail to do so, Luxembourg is lurking to overtake them anyway.

Portugal may start against Liechtenstein in this group on 16 November. At the same time, Luxembourg will play against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovakia against Iceland. Portugal then comes out once more in this round, on Sunday 19 November against Iceland. Luxembourg will visit Liechtenstein on that day, while Slovakia will decide its final match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
