Weekend Overview: W47

Weekend Overview W47

The European leagues do not stand still, as this weekend’s calendar attests. Both in Belgium, France, England and Italy we get some interesting matches. A few times, we even get top-flight matches between teams at the top of their leagues.

Friday 24 November

At 8.45pm, STVV and Royal Antwerp FC take on each other. STVV, with 18 points in place 8, are all too keen to get into that top six in the Jupiler Pro League. But Antwerp, who are in fifth place with 23 points, would make themselves slightly more certain of a spot in that top 6 with a win.

Moments later, PSG play against Monaco in the French capital. At the Parc des Princes, the leader and 3rd-placed side in the Ligue 1 will meet. In PSG’s last game, against Reims, Kylian Mbappé made it 0-3 single-handedly. However, coach Luis Enrique was not entirely satisfied with his performance, and thinks the young Frenchman needs to work more for the team. AS Monaco played a draw against Le Havre in their last match.

Saturday, 25 November

In England, we get a top affair between the first two teams in the Premier League: Manchester City and Liverpool. With a difference of just one point, Liverpool can take the lead if they win against the title holder. But Man City, with strong players like Jérémy Doku and Erling Haaland, will not give up easily. Kevin De Bruyne is still sidelined for a while due to injury.

Chelsea is not doing as well as expected in the Premier League, ranking only 10th with 16 points. It already achieved some nice results, but also went down a few times against small teams. On Saturday, it plays Newcastle, which is 3 places higher with 20 points. Newcastle also got some nice results against real top clubs: for instance, it beat Arsenal in the Premier League and won 0-3 against Manchester United in the League Cup.

Also in Italy, we get an interesting match between Atalanta and Napoli. They are ranked 5 and 4 respectively, with barely one point difference. Atalanta, featuring Red Devil Charles De Ketelaere, are also in the lead in Group D of the Europa League. In the Champions League, Napoli only has to leave Real Madrid ahead for now. It is also notable that Napoli appointed a new coach last week after Rudi Garcia was shown the door.

Standard Liège are not doing as well as expected, and are in place 9 with 17 points. Also, they will not be able to count on their star keeper Zinho Vanheusden this weekend. He picked up a yellow card just before the international break when Standard visited den Antwerp. That match was won by the home side by the way, with a score of 6-0 then. If the Liege players were able to cope with that setback, they might get a good result against Genk. That Limburg team is not playing a perfect course, but it is in 4th place in the Jupiler Pro League.

Sunday 26 November

On Sunday, we get a top affair between Union and Gent. Autumn champions Union took advantage of the tie between Anderlecht and Ghent last time out by winning against Kortrijk themselves. As a result, they already increased their lead over RSCA to six points. So this week, they can ensure an even bigger lead themselves if they win against the Buffaloes. They are counting on star keeper Vanhoutte.

Second place in the Jupiler Pro League is for RSC Anderlecht. They play Sunday against RWDM, which does not get as good marks as it had hoped. Only against Eupen on 11 November did it end a run of seven games without victory. The match against Anderlecht is only their first match after that victory. Anderlecht can lean on a good series, with 3 wins in the last 5 games.

Also in Italy, another important match will be played: leader Inter Milan plays Juventus, who are second in Serie A. Inter Milan are also playing well in the Champions League, but had to give up the lead to Real Sociedad. In their own league, they are doing almost impeccably. It is the first time this season that the two teams will meet.
