European Competitions Day 6: Preview
On the sixth and final matchday in the European competitions, the teams play one last time in the group round of the largest European competitions for clubs. View this week’s most interesting matches here.
Champions League
Bayern Munich has already secured their place, but the other teams in Group A are still fighting for second place. Copenhagen and Galatasaray can even battle it out against each other, they will compete on Tuesday, December 12 in the Danish capital. The challenge is a bit bigger for Manchester United, they play against Bayern Munich.
In group D, Real Sociedad and Inter Milan are both at the top with 11 points. That makes their match on December 12 extra exciting: the winner of that match is also the group winner. Inter Milan know what it’s like to be at the top, they are currently 2 points clear at the top of Serie A. Real Sociedad are also doing well in La Liga, and are in 6th place.
Atlético Madrid is only 1 point ahead in first place, just ahead of Lazio Roma. They will also battle it out for the group win among themselves on Wednesday, December 13. Atlético Madrid has won 3 times in its previous 5 matches in La Liga and is in 3rd place. Lazio Roma still needs to pick up some points in Serie A, as they are only in 10th place.
PSG must win their match against BVB Dortmund, otherwise they could still be eliminated by Newcastle or AC Milan. The top club from France has been in the lead in Ligue 1 for a while now, and has been undefeated for a number of matches. Dortmund plays a more difficult course, but is in 5th place.
Barcelona is also assured of their place, but it will be exciting for Porto and Shakhtar. The two teams both have 9 points and are competing against each other for second place. Porto can rely on a good series of matches. The Portuguese have won the three previous matches and are in 2nd place in the Liga Portugal. The Ukrainians from Shakhtar Donetsk are in 4th place in the Vyshcha Liha.
Europa League
West Ham are doing well, but Freiburg also won their last 3 games. Now the teams are level on 12 points. The two are in approximately the same position in their own league, at 9th in the Premier League and 8th in the Bundesliga respectively.
Marseille and Brighton will play the match for the leadership spot on Thursday. Marseille are now at the top with 11 points, ahead of Brighton with 10 points. Both teams were able to win their previous three games.
Liverpool can no longer be thrown off their pedestal. The Reds are at the top with 12 points, 4 points ahead of Toulouse. As a result, Union may still have a chance to advance. The people of Brussels are 3 points behind Toulouse, but if they beat Liverpool with enough goals and Toulouse loses, they will still advance. Although a third place, and associated Conference League ticket, may be more realistic.
AS Roma also still has to work if it wants to beat Slavia Prague. The Italians have already collected 10 points, but that was not enough to overtake the Czechs. They already have 12 points. That’s why it will be exciting, because the Giallorossi have to win against Sheriff and hope that Slavia loses to Servette or draws.
Europa Conference League
LOSC and Slovan Bratislava are barely separated by a point. They don’t play against each other this week, so they have to do well themselves and hope that the other doesn’t get any points. LOSC plays against Ki Klaksvik, a team from the Faroe Islands. Slovan Bratislava will then play against Olimpija, from Ljubljana in Slovenia.
It will also be exciting for Ghent. They are currently in the lead, but Maccabi Tel-Aviv is a point behind them. On Thursday, December 14, they will play against each other for the group win. Ghent has drawn once in the last 5 matches, Tel-Aviv lost once.
Club Brugge is 3 points ahead in first place, but if Bodo/Glimt beat them they will lose their place. But Club can also build on a good series, with 4 wins in 5 games. Bodo/Glimt, on the other hand, has to make do with 3 wins, a draw and a loss.
Genk will no longer be able to achieve the group win. They can still come into second place if they beat Cukaricki with enough goals. Then they jump over Ferencvaros, which is in second place with 9 points. But then they also have to hope that Fiorentina wins against the Hungarian club.
