AFCON 2023: Belgian Teams
The African Football Championship, or AFCON 2023, starts on January 13. 24 national teams compete against each other to call themselves the best on the African continent. Most of the final selections were also recently announced. Read below which football players from the Jupiler Pro League must register with their national team.
AFCON 2023
The African Football Championship promises to be one with a high JPL content. The 2024 Africa Cup of Nations is already the 34th edition and will be played in Ivory Coast. Senegal is the current champion, and Egypt is the team with the most titles.
RSC Anderlecht
The Brussels team from Anderlecht are missing two players: Majeed Ashimeru and Amadou Diawara. Ashimeru is called up to the Ghana national team. The midfielder has only played 6 games for Anderlecht this season and has not yet scored. The Guinea team expects Amadou Diawara. He was acquired from AS Roma in 2022 and played 11 games with Anderlecht this season.
RSC Charleroi
Hervé Koffi has already played 20 games for RSC Charleroi, so Felice Mazzù must quickly decide who will take his place. Koffi is called up for the Burkina Faso team.
Club Brugge
Raphael Onyedika has already played 18 games in the Jupiler Pro League and 7 in the Champions League for Blauw-Zwart this season, but the midfielder has not yet been able to score any goals. He will play for Nigeria in January and February. Dennis Odoi has also played 11 games for Club Brugge this season. He is called up for the Ghanaian national team.
KRC Genk at AFCON 2023
The young Bilal El Khannous is already a regular at KRC Genk, but was called up for the national team of Morocco. He played in all 20 of Genk’s games in the Jupiler Pro League this season and scored 3 times.
Joris Kayembe also has to prepare for international football. The player is part of the final selection for DR Congo. He played 12 games in the Jupiler Pro League this season and scored once.
Joseph Paintsil is also a permanent fixture in head coach Wouter Vrancken’s team. He played 19 games in the Jupiler Pro League and scored 6 times. He also scored once in two games in the Europa League. He will strengthen the Ghanaian team at AFCON.
Alieu Fadera, the striker involved in five goals in the Jupiler Pro League, is the fourth Genk player to participate in the Africa Cup and represent The Gambia.
KAA Ghent
Ghent paid a record amount of six million for Nurio Fortuna in 2020, but it looks like he won’t be playing for the Buffalos for much longer. The injury-prone linsback has not been too lucrative for the team from the East Flemish capital. He plays for Angola in January and February.
Tarik Tissoudali has also been playing for Ghent since 2020, and often proves his added value. This season he already scored 9 goals in 19 games in the Jupiler Pro League. He plays for Morocco in the championship.
KV Mechelen
Midfielder Mory Konaté has been playing for KV Mechelen since last year. He may play for Guinea in the African Football Championship. The midfielder has played 15 games for KV Mechelen so far this season.
STVV
Aboubakary Koïta is one of the strong players at STVV, which means that the Canaries will have to miss him for a while. He was called up to Mauritania. Koita has already played 20 matches and scored 11 times.
Union S.G
Mohamed Amoura can also pack his suitcases. The Union Saint-Gilloise sensation plays in the Algeria selection. Amoura has already scored 13 goals in 15 games in the JPL this season, and he has also scored twice in 6 games in the Europa League.
Host country Ivory Coast can count on Jean Thierry Lazare Amani. This footballer has been playing for Union since 2022 and plays almost every match. This season he has already played 19 games in the Jupiler Pro League and 8 in the Europa League.
