El Derbi Madrileño: Preview
On Sunday, February 4, Atlético Madrid will be in the stadium of their city rival. They will compete for three points in the Primera Division, the highest Spanish division, also known as La Liga. But that’s not the only thing at stake: who can call themselves the best club in Madrid after Sunday during El Derbi Madrileño?
El Derbi Madrileño
The Derby immediately made history when the two clubs met in Lisbon for the 2014 Champions League final, the first time that two clubs from the same city had played the final. Since then, they have played against each other a total of 235 times, in the Spanish league and just about every European competition. In mutual matches, Real Madrid leads with 116 victories.
The previous match between the two teams was in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, the Spanish national cup. In the end the score was 4-2 and Atlético Madrid knocked their city rivals out of the tournament. The Royals were able to benefit from an own goal by Atlético keeper Jan Oblak in the first half, and Joselu also scored one in the 82nd minute, but Los Blancos’ luck was not enough to win. Atlético’s goal scorers were Samuel Lino, Alvaro Morata, Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme.
Real Madrid
The Royal Football Club has been around since 1902, and in all those years it has grown into the highest-earning football club in the world. Their home base, the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, is home to one of the largest trophy collections, including 35 league titles and 14 Champions League titles. This makes it the record holder for the number of Champions League victories, with twice as many victories as pursuer AC Milan.
This year, Real Madrid is once again having a very good season, with a second place just after Girona in the Primera Division. Real played one match less, which means they may easily be able to catch up. The Madrid side also won the final of the Supercopa de España 4-1 against Barcelona after eliminating Atlético in the semi-finals. As mentioned earlier, they were less lucky in the Copa del Rey, but that means they are eager to take revenge at Atlético.
At Real Madrid they mainly achieve their goal difference with the help of Jude Bellingham. The young Briton has already scored 14 times in 18 games this season and has also provided 3 assists. He did not play in their match against Las Palmas on January 27, and they noticed this at Real: the Madrilenians first fell behind, but then fought their way back into the match. After an equalizer by Vinicius Junior, Tchouaméni still gave the visiting team the lead.
Atlético Madrid
The Rojiblancos have been around since 1903, which makes them only a year younger than their opponent. Atlético plays its matches at the Civitas Metropolitano. Although they are almost the same age, Atlético has collected slightly fewer trophies than Real. Yet the list remains impressive: with eleven Primera Division titles, ten Copa del Rey titles and the World Cup for club teams, it remains one of the most successful Spanish teams.
This year Atlético can again rank among the best. After 20 games it is in 4th place with 41 points. As mentioned earlier, it also knocked out Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey, advancing them to the next round. They have already defeated their fellow citizens, but the Rojibiancos will not have forgotten their elimination in the Supercopa de España.
He was virtually absent against Real Madrid, but in the quarter-final against Sevilla, Memphis Depay was an important link. Coach Diego Simeone also opted for his usual striker duo of Antoine Griezmann and Álvaro Morata in this match, but replaced the two just after the hour for Ángel Correa and Depay. The Dutchman scored the only goal of the match to kick Atlético into the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, where they will face Athletic Bilbao.
We also have to wait a while until Arthur Vermeeren makes his appearance at the top club. Antwerp’s golden boy signed a 6.5-year contract with the Spanish top club on Friday, January 26. There he accompanies ex-Red Devil Axel Witsel. Vermeeren did not yet get to play against Valencia.
