European Competitions: Who Will Come Out on Top?

Several European competitions are approaching their final stages. In Belgium, the matches in the regular season are almost over, but the playoffs and the cup final could still provide some excitement. In most other countries, the teams will play a few more matches, but the competition will end faster than expected. It’s time to see which teams have the best chance of winning their respective national titles.

La Liga Santander (Spain)

Real Madrid has already built a small lead over rivals Girona and Barcelona. However, the Royal Whites have recently played inconsistent matches, with 3 draws in their last 5 games. If they want to stay ahead of Girona and their eternal rival Barcelona, they will have to step up their game.

For Girona, Barcelona is getting dangerously close, with currently only one point difference. After also losing to Mallorca, a team currently in 15th place, the players of Girona must fear for their position. At Barcelona, they are slightly more confident: in their last match, they drew against Athletic Bilbao, and their last defeat dates back to January 27th.

Premier League (England)

In England, there is a three-way battle between leaders Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal. These three teams are respectively placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, each with a one-point difference. With still a few matchdays to go, there are still many possible scenarios, with Aston Villa also in a reasonable position. This weekend, Liverpool and Manchester City will face each other directly. With only one point difference, this match will immediately decide who takes the lead for the moment and who also extends the gap over the other clubs.

Bundesliga (Germany)

The Rekordmeister has dropped many points compared to Leverkusen, trailing by 10 points. But in the German Bundesliga, there are still many matchdays to go, and Bayern Munich can certainly catch up with their opponent. On February 10th, the two teams faced each other directly. Leverkusen then had the upper hand, winning the match 3-0. Xabi Alonso’s team has not lost a single match this season, and only four matches have ended in a draw.

Serie A (Italy)

Inter Milan has lost only one match this season and drew three times. The club is on track to win its twentieth national title in the history of the club. With coach Simone Inzaghi and several World Cup winners in the squad, Inter Milan proves its worth this season.

With the other matches, they have already built a lead of 15 points over Juventus. The latter struggles to win, with only one win and one draw in their last five matches. They are closely followed by AC Milan, who is in third place with 56 points.

Jupiler Pro League (Belgium)

In Belgium, Union Saint-Gilloise has a solid lead, with 8 points more than runner-up Anderlecht. The mix of coach Alexander Blessin and the attacking duo Amoura-Puertas has been very successful this year, with only 2 defeats this season. They are already assured of a place in the playoffs, but the question remains of who their opponents will be.

Anderlecht is also assured of their place, with a 12-point lead over Club Brugge. But then it gets very tight: Club Brugge is tied on points with Antwerp, and they both still have two matches to play. Cercle Brugge, Genk, and Gent all have 43 points, so the battle will also be very intense. The last candidate is KV Mechelen. They have only one point less, but with a bit of luck, they can still climb into the top 6.

This week, we will have the 29th matchday out of 30, so many of the matches played will be decisive.

Ligue 1 (France)

Top club PSG has a comfortable lead over their opponents, with 9 points more than runner-up Brest. However, the Parisians have not been able to achieve more than a draw against Rennes and Monaco in recent weeks. They have played a total of 24 matches this season, won 16, and lost only one. That was back at the start of the season when they lost 2-3 at home to Nice. This week, PSG will first face Real Sociedad in the round of 16, then they will play against Reims on Sunday.
