JPL: Midweek Matchday

We’re almost halfway through the playoffs by now. Last weekend, Club Brugge secured a victory against Union, narrowing the gap with Anderlecht to 2 points. This means it’s still uncertain who will be the national champion after the next 6 matchdays. This week, the teams will again have a chance to earn some points. Read on to find out which matches we’ll see this week.

Club Brugge – Genk

As mentioned earlier, Club Brugge managed to claim an important victory against Union. In Brussels’ Joseph Marienstadion, they won 1-2, with goals from Hugo Vetlesen and Bjorn Meijer for Club Brugge. Cameron Puertas scored a free-kick goal in the 82nd minute, but Union couldn’t equalize. With this win, the Bruges team is back in contention for the title, as they were almost written off with a 19-point deficit in the regular season. This also led to the dismissal of coach Ronny Deila. However, they’ll have to do without Vetlesen, who received a red card fifteen minutes after his goal.

Genk also had a successful weekend, playing against Anderlecht at home. Despite Anderlecht equalizing in extra time with a penalty after goals from Tolu Arokodare for Genk and Anders Dreyer for Anderlecht, Andi Zeqiri secured a 2-1 victory for Genk. With this result, Genk is in 4th place in the championship round and still has a chance for the title, trailing leader Anderlecht by only 4 points. Perhaps they have a mental advantage this week.

This week, the teams will first clash on Wednesday, April 24, at Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges. This weekend, on Sunday, April 28, Club Brugge will visit the Cegeka Arena in Genk.

Anderlecht – Cercle Brugge

Anderlecht may be at the top, but last weekend, KRC Genk proved to be slightly stronger. The gap between Anderlecht and Club Brugge is narrowing. With two wins and two losses, Anderlecht’s current form is not as good as Club Brugge’s, which has secured three wins. If Club Brugge continues this streak, Anderlecht might lose their top spot. However, Anderlecht will put up a tough fight, boasting players like Jan Vertonghen, Zeno Debast, and Thorgan Hazard, ensuring a top-quality squad.

Cercle also suffered a defeat last weekend, this time against Antwerp. The Great Old scored only one goal, a well-placed shot by Chidera Ejuke. As a result, Cercle finds itself at the bottom of the table. However, with six matches remaining, they still have a chance to recover from the 9-point deficit, although it’s almost impossible. Cercle Brugge might try to surpass current title holder Antwerp, as both teams currently have the same number of points.

The venue for this week’s match is Lotto Park, where Anderlecht will host Cercle Brugge on Wednesday, April 24. On Sunday, April 28, the two teams will face each other again at Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges.

Antwerp – Union

Last weekend, the Great Old managed to score points for the first time in these playoffs, providing at least some consolation. The title defender will need to step up significantly if they want to have another chance, but it seems unlikely that they will defend their title. They also need to be wary of Cercle Brugge, who only need a draw to overtake them.

Union finished the regular season with a significant lead at the top. However, they’re struggling in the playoffs, having not won a match yet. Despite their lead in the regular season, they’re currently in 3rd place, trailing leader Anderlecht by 3 points. Before thinking about closing the gap, they need to break their losing streak and score points in these playoffs.

The Great Old will first host Union at the Bosuilstadion on Thursday, April 25. Then, Antwerp will travel to Brussels, where the next match will be played at Joseph Marienstadion on Sunday, April 28.
