Magic Game: Merseyside Derby

Merseyside

On Wednesday, April 24th, Everton and Liverpool will face each other in the Premier League. In this ‘Merseyside Derby’, as these matches are also known, it’s often about more than just football. Read on to see how the derby will unfold this week.

Merseyside Derby

This derby is between two teams from the city of Liverpool. It gets its name from the region where this city is located: Merseyside. The Merseyside derby is sometimes called the ‘friendly derby’ because many families in the region have both Everton and Liverpool supporters. Even the final of the 1984 Football League Cup is also called the ‘friendly final,’ where supporters stood mixed together and chanted ‘Merseyside’ together. The rivalry has become more intense over the last 50 years, and the matches have seen more red cards than any other duel in the Premier League.

the two teams have faced each other 243 times. Of those matches, Liverpool won 99, Everton won 67, and 77 ended in a draw. Statistically, Liverpool has the upper hand, and they could secure their 100th victory in this derby. All the more reason for them to put their best foot forward.

The last encounter between them was on October 21, 2023, with a 2-0 victory for Liverpool. Mohamed Salah was the scorer on that occasion, putting Liverpool ahead from the penalty spot and scoring again in extra time. Salah is likely to be present again this time.

Everton

Everton was founded in 1878 by members of a school from Liverpool, making it the oldest club in Liverpool. Their home stadium is Goodison Park, with a capacity of around 40,000 supporters. In 1891, the club could become champions for the first time, but Everton would only become one of the powerhouses of English football in the 1980s. Under the guidance of coach Howard Kendall, they became champions twice, and in 1985, they won the Europa League (then known as the UEFA Cup). Famous players from that time include Gary Lineker and Neville Southall.

This season, Everton hasn’t performed well, currently sitting in 16th place in the Premier League. With a 5-point lead over Luton Town and 5 games to go, they’re not yet safe, but it seems likely that they’ll remain in the English top flight. Their last match ended in a 2-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest, with Idrissa Gueye and Dwight McNeil scoring.

These two names are likely to be present again. Coach Sean Dyche can also field one Belgian: Amadou Onana. He has scored 2 goals for Everton so far. The top scorers at this club are Abdoulaye Doucouré and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with 6 and 5 goals respectively this season.

Liverpool

Liverpool FC was founded on March 15, 1892, by John Houlding, the owner of Anfield, after being expelled by Everton. The field where he started the club is still the home of the current club, and there is now a stadium with around 60,000 seats. Liverpool is among the top teams both in Europe and in England. Their titles speak for themselves: they have won the Champions League 6 times and have been English champions 19 times. In 2019, they also won their first Club World Cup.

Currently, Liverpool is in second place in the Premier League, level on points with Arsenal. That’s why this match is so important, as Manchester City is just one point behind. In the last match, they could secure second place by defeating Fulham. After ninety minutes of play, it was 1-3. Fulham’s only goal came from Belgian Timothy Castagne, while Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ryan Gravenberch, and Diogo Jota scored for Liverpool.

The latter has already scored 10 goals for Liverpool, but there are two players with more goals for the ‘Reds’: Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez, who have scored 7 and 11 respectively. With that, Jürgen Klopp, himself a world-class coach, can field a world-class selection.
