Weekend Overview: W17

Weekend Overview W17

This weekend, there are again many interesting matches on the schedule. With the leagues almost done, it becomes important for the teams to secure the best positions. Read on to see which clubs can gather some points this week.

Friday, April 26th

Eupen gets almost the last chance this weekend to save themselves from relegation. The club from the German-speaking city hasn’t won any matches in the playoffs yet and is just above Kortrijk in the standings. With three games left, Eupen can’t take the lead anymore, but maybe they can still reach the second place. To do that, they would first have to surpass RWDM. This match is especially important for Charleroi. With three extra points, they would be 9 points ahead if RWDM doesn’t win against Kortrijk. In that case, they would also immediately win the Relegation Play-offs.

Saturday, April 27th

In the German Bundesliga, RB Leipzig plays against BVB Dortmund for a ticket to the Champions League. The battle for the league title has been over for both teams for a while, so they’re currently aiming for the highest possible position. Dortmund is now 2 points behind RB Leipzig, and with 4 matchdays left, there’s still a lot possible. Both teams mainly play against each other and the teams above them, as they have enough lead over the teams behind them. Therefore, we can almost see this match as a direct duel for a spot in the Champions League group stage.

Juventus plays against AC Milan in a duel in the Italian Serie A. Inter Milan secured the league title on Monday, April 22nd, in a city derby against AC Milan. With that, the title race in Serie A is definitively over. What’s still at stake are the European tickets. With 5 matchdays left, many teams are still not sure of their place. Juventus and AC Milan can secure their ticket in this interesting match, but both teams couldn’t win their last two matches. They’ll have to break that less favorable streak if they want to gain some advantage now.

The playoffs have also been going on for a while in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. This weekend, there’s a duel between Gent and Westerlo in the Conference League Play-off. Gent can extend their lead to 7 points compared to Mechelen, and Westerlo should mainly try to gather some points for the first time. If Gent wins, the final standings are almost set. The difference between Gent and Westerlo is already 17 points at the moment.

Sunday, April 28th

Again in Belgium, we’ll see a match between Genk and Club Brugge. Club Brugge can take the lead in this round, while Genk still needs at least 5 points. If one of the teams wins, the other will have to stop their good streak. And if they can’t fight for the title anymore, they’ll certainly put their best foot forward for a ticket to Europe.

In the English Premier League, nothing is certain yet. At the top, there are 3 contenders for the title, including leader Arsenal. They’re tied with Liverpool in 1st place, and Manchester City is in 3rd place with just 1 point less. After this match, Arsenal can increase their lead and create some distance. Tottenham will try to prevent that: the Spurs are currently in 5th place, just outside the Champions League spots. With a 6-point gap, they can still climb a spot.
