In May, many countries see the conclusion of nearly all their leagues. Belgium is no exception, and soon we’ll finally know who takes the title home this year. We start this weekend in Belgium with a clash between Standard and Westerlo. This match will largely determine who finishes last in the Europe Play-offs this year. Standard hasn’t won a single game in these playoffs, but they gathered more points than Westerlo did in the regular season and are thus ahead of the Kemphanen. Westerlo hasn’t won a game in the playoffs either. The difference between the two teams is 4 points. That means Westerlo can’t afford to lose this match either, or else the team from Kempen will end up in the last place.

In England, the battle for the national title is still in full swing. Leader Arsenal faces stiff competition, especially from Manchester City. The Cityzens are only one point behind and could claim the top spot this week if they defeat Fulham. Fulham is currently in 13th place. Manchester City can rely on an impressive streak, having gone unbeaten in six consecutive Premier League matches. However, they were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid.
On the final matchday of the relegation round, Kortrijk needs to secure a spot in the relegation playoff. With only one point separating them from RWDM, Kortrijk must win against Charleroi to have a chance of remaining in the Jupiler Pro League. If Kortrijk fails to win, RWDM still has a chance to overtake them. In that case, Kortrijk will drop immediately to 1B along with Eupen. This match will definitively determine which two teams will be relegated to the second division. Charleroi is already assured of staying in the Jupiler Pro League.
Also in Belgium, Anderlecht faces Genk. Anderlecht has much to gain from winning this match, as Club Brugge is dangerously close to clinching the title. With only three matchdays left, neither club can afford a loss. Anderlecht needs to collect two more points to catch up with Club Brugge, but Union is also in the race for the title with just one point less than Anderlecht. Genk, on the other hand, needs to break their poor streak: they lost their last 3 matches and have won only once in their last 5 matches. While Anderlecht won twice, their last two matches ended in draws.
Sunday 12/05
In the Challenger Pro League, both Lommel SK and Deinze dream of securing a place in the Jupiler Pro League. This week, they will decide definitively in the promotion battle. In the previous match, they ended in a 1-1 draw, so they start fresh in this match. Deinze might have the advantage this time, but in Lommel, that didn’t make much of a difference. The latter managed to surprisingly win against Zulte Waregem in the semi-finals.
Arsenal could make a significant move against Manchester United in the Premier League. The Gunners are at the top of the English league, but Manchester City is only one point behind. With only a few matches left, Arsenal can widen their lead and improve their chances of winning the national title. Manchester United is aiming to break into the top 5, but with 54 points, they are currently in 8th place. Not an advantageous position, but the players will undoubtedly try to win as many matches as possible.
To conclude, we return to Belgium, where Antwerp takes on Cercle Brugge. Antwerp has only won once in these playoffs, namely against Cercle Brugge, but the Bruges team is one place higher in the standings. The title is slightly out of reach for both teams, but everyone wants to finish as high as possible.
