Anderlecht – Club Brugge

Both clubs first played against each other in 1921 and have since grown to become two of Belgium’s most successful clubs. Anderlecht became national champion for the first time in 1947 and remains the record holder to this day with 34 national titles. Club Brugge became champion for the first time in 1920 but holds the record for the Belgian Cup.

The last time these clubs faced each other was on April 7th. In the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges, the home team managed to prevail, with Club Brugge winning 3-1. The goal scorers were Brandon Mechele and Raphael Onyedika for Club Brugge and Anders Dreyer for Anderlecht.

Both clubs stand to gain equally from this match, as they are in 1st and 2nd place with 46 points each. Victory would benefit both teams greatly, but a draw would make the next matchday even more thrilling.

RSC Anderlecht

Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht was founded on May 27th, 1908, and is affiliated with the Belgian Football Association with registration number 35. Its colors are purple and white, and it plays its home matches at Lotto Park. Since 1935, RSCA has been competing in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. It has won the national title thirty-four times, making it the club with the most titles in Belgium. Anderlecht has also won the Belgian Cup nine times and the Belgian Super Cup ten times. In European competitions, Anderlecht has had success, winning the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup twice, the UEFA Super Cup twice, and the UEFA Cup once.

Anderlecht started the championship round with 32 points, 3 fewer than Union and 4 more than Club Brugge and Antwerp. On the first matchday, they narrowly surpassed Antwerp, but on the second matchday, Club Brugge was the better team. After that, Anderlecht managed to win 3 more times, draw twice, and lose once. With these results, Anderlecht currently tops the table.

Anderlecht’s coach is Brian Riemer. The Danish coach can field several Belgian national team players in his squad, such as Zeno Debast, Jan Vertonghen, and Thorgan Hazard. However, the real goal scorers for Anderlecht are Kasper Dolberg and Anders Dreyer. Dolberg has scored 14 goals, while Dreyer has scored 17.

Club Brugge

This West Flemish club was founded on November 13th, 1891, and has registration number 3. It has been playing continuously in the Jupiler Pro League, Belgium’s top division, since 1959. Among the two Bruges teams, Cercle Brugge and Club Brugge, the latter is the more successful and popular. It has been crowned national champion eighteen times. Only RSC Anderlecht, their opponent in this match, has earned more national titles in Belgium. No other club in Belgium has won more cups and super cups than Club Brugge. Club Brugge is also the only Belgian club to have reached the final of the European Cup I, also known as the Champions League.

Throughout the regular season, Club Brugge collected 51 points, securing 4th place and a ticket to the championship play-offs. They have not lost a single match in the play-offs and have only drawn twice. This has propelled them to the second position, just below Anderlecht. With their draw against Union on Monday, they remain tied with Anderlecht on points in 2nd place. Anderlecht currently holds the advantage, as if the two teams finish with equal points, Anderlecht will win. Club Brugge must therefore hope that Anderlecht loses once more, and they themselves must win and either draw or win again.

The coach at Club Brugge is currently Nicky Hayen. His team is largely composed of Belgian players, such as Simon Mignolet and Hans Vanaken. However, it is mainly Igor Thiago and Andreas Skov Olsen who provide the goals: Thiago has scored 18 goals so far this season, while Skov Olsen has scored 11.
