After nearly two weeks, the group stage of the 2024 European Championship is already over. The teams now get a few days of rest, but starting Saturday, they’ll be back in action. Here is a brief summary of the group stage.
Group A
Germany began their Euro campaign convincingly with a 5-1 win over Scotland. This immediately put them at the top of the ranking, where they would ultimately finish. With another victory against Hungary and a draw against Switzerland, it was clear who the top favorite in this group was. It was also clear that Switzerland would finish second. They won 3-1 against Hungary on the second day of the Euro and secured their place with two more draws. Scotland and Hungary ultimately earned too few points to qualify for the round of 16.
Switzerland will play Italy on Saturday, while Germany will face Denmark later that day.
Group B
Spain proved unbeatable in this group, which initially seemed challenging with Italy and Croatia. The Spaniards remained strong in every match and became the group winners. Croatia could not qualify even on the final match day and had to watch Italy secure their spot in the round of 16 in the last seconds of the game. For Albania, after a defeat against Italy and a draw against Croatia, it was almost impossible to secure their ticket to the next round against Spain.
Thus, Spain and Italy advance to the next round. On Saturday, Italy will play Switzerland, and Spain will face Georgia a day later.
Group C
In a group without too many surprises, but with a less-than-expected performance from England, Denmark, England, and Slovenia advance to the next round. In total, five matches ended in draws, with only one victory for England against Serbia. That goal was scored by Jude Bellingham. Alongside England and Denmark, Slovenia also advances, finishing among the best four third-placed teams.
Group winners England will face Slovakia on Sunday, who won against Belgium on the first match day. Denmark will play Germany on the first day, and Slovenia will meet Portugal on Monday.
Group D
Despite starting the Euro with a defeat, Austria ended up winning the group that included France, the Netherlands, and Poland. After the 0-1 loss to France, they managed to win against Poland and the Netherlands. France, with the injured Kylian Mbappé, finished second. With two draws after the win against Austria, they ended with just one point less than the group winner. The Netherlands also secured their place with one win and one draw.
Of these three teams, France will play first in a quarter-final against Belgium on Monday, July 1. The Netherlands and Austria will play a day later against Romania and Turkey, respectively.
Group E
In a group where every team ended with 4 points after the group stage, it is unfortunate that the last team did not advance. On the first day, Ukraine was defeated by Romania 3-0, and that goal difference would later haunt them. Each team won once, drew once, and lost once. Goal difference was thus the decisive factor. As a result, Romania, Belgium, and Slovakia advance to the round of 16.
Slovakia will play first on Sunday, June 30, against the formidable England. A day later, Belgium will face France, and a day after that, Romania will meet the Netherlands.
Group F
This group provided some surprises, including surprisingly strong performances from Turkey and Georgia. These two countries first played against each other, with Turkey winning the match. Georgia continued to play well, securing a win against Portugal after a draw with the Czech Republic. Portugal, however, was already certain of their round of 16 spot after two matches. Thus, a strong Turkey finished second in Group F, and a sensational Georgia also qualified for the next round.
Georgia will face top favorite Spain on Sunday. Group winners Portugal will play Slovenia a day later, and Turkey will close the round of 16 against Austria.
