Preview: Wimbledon 2024

Wimbledon

On Monday, July 1, Wimbledon kicked off. The oldest tennis tournament in the world is also regarded as the most prestigious and is known for its grass courts. This year, there are three clear top favorites among the men, while among the women, a top favorite just had to withdraw. Who will take home the trophy this year?

Wimbledon 2024

This year marks the 137th edition of this legendary tennis tournament. At the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, the world’s best tennis players will compete from July 1 to July 14 for the coveted gold-colored trophy. Of course, the trophy is not the only prize, as the winners also take home about £2.7 million. In total, there is about £50 million or approximately €60 million in prize money available. In the main tournament, the singles competition, 128 male and 128 female tennis players will participate.

Men’s Singles

The best tennis player in the world, currently ranked number one, is Italian Jannik Sinner. He became the Australian Open champion in January and has won a total of four tournaments this calendar year. Leading up to Wimbledon, he won his first grass title in Halle. In the previous edition of Wimbledon, he reached the last four.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is also having an incredible year. He is ranked second but managed to win both Roland Garros and Indian Wells. In both tournaments, he also won the head-to-head matches with Sinner. Their rivalry has been ongoing for several years, with Alcaraz currently leading 5-4. A tenth match-up is possible in the last four at Wimbledon.

Another absolute top favorite is Novak Djokovic. He has won the tournament seven times, just one less than Roger Federer. Last year, Djokovic had to settle for second place behind Alcaraz, preventing him from equaling the record. This year, he aims to change that. However, it might be challenging for the legendary player as he recently underwent surgery following an injury at Roland Garros. Nonetheless, his practice matches have gone well.

Women’s Singles

Marketa Vondrousova is the defending champion among the women. She is ranked 6th in the WTA ranking but injured herself leading up to Wimbledon at a tennis tournament in Berlin. She is scheduled to play her first match on Tuesday, July 2. Last year, she won her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon.

The world number one is Iga Swiatek. The Pole won Roland Garros for the fourth time in early June. Two sets were enough to defeat Italian Jasmine Paolini. With this victory, Swiatek became the first since Justine Henin to win Roland Garros three times in a row. In total, she lost only one set during the tournament this year.

On July 1, Coco Gauff played her first match and won in two sets against her compatriot Caroline Dolehide. Gauff is ranked third in the world and has a good chance of winning Wimbledon this year. In a head-to-head match with Iga Swiatek in Rome, Gauff had to acknowledge Swiatek’s superiority, but she will certainly be seeking revenge.

Men’s Doubles

The men’s doubles begin on Wednesday, July 3, and on that day, we will also see a match featuring a Belgian duo. Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen start their Wimbledon journey with a match against Argentinians Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Francisco Cerundolo. Gillé and Vliegen reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros this year.

Another well-known duo is that of Jamie and Andy Murray. The brothers are competing together for the title in this tournament. Additionally, the Tsitsipas brothers and Daniil Medvedev are also participating.

Women’s Doubles

In the women’s doubles, we also have two Belgians, but they each play in a different duo. Elise Mertens is once again playing with her trusted partner Hsieh Su-wei. Together, they won Wimbledon in 2021. The other Belgian, Greet Minnen, is playing with American Heather Watson. Both Mertens and Minnen have also advanced to the next round in singles.

Like the two Belgian ladies, Coco Gauff is competing in both singles and doubles. Gauff will start the tournament on Wednesday with her compatriot Jessica Pegula.
