The final of EURO 2024 will be played on Sunday, July 14th, at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Spain and England will compete for the title in the 17th edition of the European Championship. Spain vs. England
The first time Spain and England faced each other was in a friendly match in Madrid on May 15, 1929. Spain narrowly won that game 4-3. In total, the countries have played against each other 27 times, with England winning 13 matches. That’s three more than their opponent, and four games ended in a draw.
The last encounter was a group match during the 2018-19 Nations League season. In Seville, Raheem Sterling scored twice for England, and Marcus Rashford also scored a goal, leading to a 3-2 victory for the English. However, they were later defeated by the Netherlands, who lost to Portugal in the final. England eventually finished third after a penalty shootout against Switzerland.
Sterling and Rashford will not be present this year. Raheem Sterling had a good season with Chelsea, so it’s strange that he wasn’t called up by coach Gareth Southgate. However, reaching the final won’t be enough for the ambitious Spaniards. They aim to break the record for the most European Championship titles, which they currently share with Germany. The latter was also sent home by Spain after Mikel Merino scored a late goal to make it 2-1. This came after they defeated Georgia 4-1 in the round of 16. Spain was also the only group winner without dropping any points, making their journey almost perfect.
As mentioned earlier, Lamine Yamal scored his first Euro goal against France. After the final, he could become the youngest European champion. Together with Nico Williams, he forms a dangerous attack for any team, with Alvaro Morata as additional support. Dani Olmo could also become the top scorer of this Euro, as he currently shares the top spot with three goals. The only one who could surpass him is Harry Kane.
England
In the semi-finals, England faced the Netherlands. Before ten minutes had passed, the Dutch were ahead thanks to a stunning strike from Xavi Simons. Another ten minutes later, the English equalized, but Harry Kane had to do it from the penalty spot. The match remained even for a long time, with some shots and chances here and there, but none found the net. The Netherlands and England seemed headed for extra time until Ollie Watkins forced a goal in the last second of regular time. The Dutch Euro dream was over.
England wanted a rematch of the 2021 Euro final, where they faced Italy. However, Italy was already eliminated by Switzerland in the round of 16, but England will still be eager to claim the European title this time. Until the duel with the Netherlands, the English didn’t seem very strong, with matches often ending in draws. However, they defeated Slovakia and Switzerland in the knockout round.
For England, Harry Kane has scored the most goals so far, but Jude Bellingham has only one less. This team knows how to finish on goal. Only Phil Foden has yet to find his best form: the Manchester City forward hasn’t created many chances but played his best match against the Netherlands.
