The 2024 Olympics in Paris are currently underway, and some medals have already been awarded. Among the winners are Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel and Wout Van Aert, who won gold and bronze respectively in the time trial. In the coming days, many more outstanding athletes will compete. Here is an overview of some interesting sports and the Belgians participating in them.
Tuesday 30/7
Normally, the men’s triathlon final would have been held, but it has been postponed again due to the poor water quality of the Seine. The athletes must first swim 1.5 kilometers, then cycle 40 km, and finally run 10 km to the finish. Representing Belgium are Marten Van Riel and Jelle Geens. They will compete against medal contenders Alex Yee from the United Kingdom and Hayden Wilde from New Zealand.
Later that same morning, Tim Brys will compete for a spot in the semifinals in rowing. Brys finished third in the heats of the single sculls, enough to qualify. He was even on track for second place, but Japan’s Ryuta Arakawa just edged him out. The semifinals will follow on Wednesday or Thursday, with the finals on Friday or Saturday.
Judoka Matthias Casse also has an important match on this day. In the finals for the last 32 players, he faces Sibghatullah Arab of the Olympic Refugee Team. Casse is a former world and European judo champion, and he won bronze in Tokyo.
Wednesday 31/7
A day later than the men, the women will also compete in the triathlon final, and here too, two Belgian athletes will be at the start. Claire Michel and Jolien Vermeylen will represent Belgium, hoping for a medal. The 30-year-old Vermeylen is making her Olympic debut, while Claire Michel is expected to retire from top-level sport after this year. Along with the men, these two women will also compete for a medal in the mixed relay triathlon on August 5.
Rowing will again be a sport to watch, as Tibo Vyvey and Niels Van Zandweghe represent Belgium in the semifinals. They did not directly qualify for this semifinal in the lightweight double sculls but finished first in their repechage heat.
Thursday 1/8
On Thursday, we are especially looking forward to combat sports like judo and boxing. Toma Nikiforov represents Belgium in a round of 32 match in judo, Victor Schelstraete competes in the boxing quarterfinals, and Oshin Derieuw boxes for Belgium in the round of 16. A place in the semifinals for Schelstraete would also mean a medal, as two bronze medals are awarded in boxing.
Friday 2/8
Friday will feature many Olympic swimming finals. The men’s 50-meter freestyle and 200-meter freestyle, as well as the women’s 200-meter backstroke, will be decided on Friday. In the evening, the men’s 10,000-meter race is scheduled. Also on Friday are the mixed doubles tennis final, the BMX racing final, and the men’s 3-meter springboard diving final.
Saturday 3/8
More athletics on Saturday, with the women’s 100-meter final in the evening. Before that, there will be several gymnastics finals, including the men’s floor exercise and pommel horse, and the women’s vault final. More athletics can be seen in the shot put final, the triple jump, and the 4×400 meter relay. We end Saturday with the swimming final in the men’s 100-meter butterfly.
Sunday 4/8
On the last day of the week, we have another athletics final with the men’s 100 meters. This event is in the evening, and in the afternoon, several finals in both athletics and swimming will be decided. The biggest star we will see on Sunday is Nina Derwael, who will defend her title on the uneven bars.
