Baseball Betting: A Complete Guide

Baseball betting: A complete guide

Baseball is super popular in the US, and here there are also many players who like to bet on these games. If you want to win by betting on baseball, there are three types of bets to consider: betting on the final result, the number of points (under/over) and predicting who will win the league.

Odds for betting on baseball

Baseball is a sport where there is always a winner. This makes the odds quite interesting, as the chances of winning are about 50/50. You do need some knowledge about the teams to be successful. Besides betting on the final outcome, the odds for under/over a certain number of runs are often lucrative as well.

Betting tips for betting on baseball

Baseball is a sport in which it is best to bet on games later in the season. This can be tricky for the impulsive player, but it is crucial for success. That way, you can better assess what the current season’s statistics tell you.

Pitcher

The pitcher is really one of the most important players on the field. With one bad pitch, he can turn the whole game around. With the pitcher, we pay particular attention to his ERA (Earned Run Average). It is calculated by dividing the number of runs he gives up by the number of innings he has pitched, and multiplying that result by nine. The lower the ERA, the better the pitcher is.

But the ERA is not the only thing that matters with a pitcher. If you get to know the sport a bit better, it also becomes interesting to look at the kind of balls he throws, how many walks he gives away, and the number of strikeouts, and so on.

Bullpen

When the starting pitcher has thrown about a hundred pitches, he is often replaced to spare his arm and avoid injuries. In the Bullpen, a kind of small training room, the relieving pitchers and closing pitchers warm up.

The relievers take over from the starting pitcher, while the closer usually comes into action only in the last inning. The bullpen can play a big role in the outcome of a game. It regularly happens that a reliever messes up a game that is still exciting. So be careful with your expectations in the last innings and get to know the strengths of relievers and closers.

Time frame

Baseball players are pretty busy during the season. In six months, they play at least 162 games. Although baseball is not the toughest sport, a game lasts around three to four hours on average.

So there is not much time to relax between games, and sometimes teams also have to take long plane rides when they play away from home. It is therefore not surprising that at some point they get tired and concentration wanes a bit. If a team has just finished a long flight and has to play again immediately, it might be smart to leave your bet on that team for a while.

Weather

Weather plays a crucial role in how a baseball game goes. Is it cold or hot? How much wind is there, and might it be raining? These are all things to consider when placing a bet.

For example, if there is a lot of wind, it can have a big impact on the balls the pitcher throws. If you have a pitcher who throws a lot of curveballs, the wind will definitely affect his pitches. And if it is cold, the pitcher may not throw as smoothly. Rain can also affect the grip on the ball.

Shape

It is super important to pay attention to how the pitcher and hitters have been performing lately. Can the pitcher throw the right balls, do the hitters hit the balls well and does the team manage to win its games?

If you can say ‘yes’ to all these three questions, then it is definitely worth thinking about a bet. But if a team is in really bad form, it can also be smart to bet against them. The better the form, the higher the chances of winning.

Types of bets

Betting on baseball doesn’t have that many different types of bets. The three main ones are the moneyline, runline and over/under.

With the moneyline, you bet on the team you think will win. The runline is a kind of handicap bet, where you expect a team to win by a good number of runs difference.

With over/under bets, you usually look at the total number of runs both teams score together. For example, it can be interesting to look at the over if there are two lesser pitchers facing each other with a high ERA and both teams can hit well.

MLB season

Once Spring Training is over, the MLB season kicks off in the first week of April. The official season runs until the first week of November, when each team has played its 162 games.

The MLB is divided into two major leagues: the American League and the National League. Halfway through the season, the All-Star game takes place, where the top players from both leagues compete against each other. Each league is further divided into three divisions.

After the regular season, the World Series are played. The winners of the six divisions are guaranteed a spot. In addition, two more teams from both leagues (the best teams that did not win a division) compete for a wildcard. In the end, one of the eight teams can call itself the champion.
