UEFA Nations League 2024-2025

On Thursday, September 5, the fourth edition of the UEFA Nations League begins. Defending champion Spain also managed to live up to their favorites role at the European Championship, making them once again a very formidable opponent in this tournament.

UEFA Nations League

This biennial tournament is being held for the fourth time, six years after the first edition in 2018. In the Nations League, 54 UEFA members compete against each other, divided into four leagues based on their international performances. Within these leagues, they are further split into groups, with each country playing both home and away matches against the teams in their group.

After the group stage, teams follow a new path. The first and second place teams in the groups in League A qualify for the quarterfinals, where they will play playoffs to determine who advances to the final round. There will also be playoffs for promotion and relegation between all leagues. The quarterfinals start on March 20, the final round on June 4. The final is scheduled for June 8, 2025.

League A

In the first group of the top league, Croatia begins with a tough task against Portugal. These two teams are considered the strongest contenders in the group, which also includes Poland and Scotland.

Belgium can be found in the second group of League A. It will be extremely exciting to see who advances, as both the Red Devils, France, and Italy have a chance to be among the top two teams. The only outsider in this group is Israel.

Just like in the first group, group 3 also seems to be decided in advance: it is expected that Germany and the Netherlands will advance. They are joined in this group by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary.

The last group of League A will be thrilling once again: defending champion Spain is likely to qualify, but then Denmark and Switzerland will battle for second place. For Serbia, this group may be just a bit too difficult.

League B

At the European Championship in Germany, Georgia finished above the Czech Republic during the group stage, so they will be eager to replicate that result. However, in the group with Albania and Ukraine, they face a tough challenge, and winning the group and perhaps even second place may be just out of reach.

In the second group, England is expected to win the group fairly easily, allowing them to promote to League A. The English team will face three teams that did not qualify for the European Championship: Finland, Greece, and Ireland. The battle for second place should still be exciting.

Austria played strongly at the European Championship and won their group against France, the Netherlands, and Poland. If they can maintain that level, they should comfortably win the group against Kazakhstan, Norway, and Slovenia. The latter team also held their own in the European Championship group against England and Denmark.

The last group includes Iceland, Montenegro, and Wales. These three teams did not qualify for the European Championship, but now have the chance to fight for promotion in the Nations League. With Turkey as an opponent, they will mainly be competing for second place, as the Turks finished second in their group at the European Championship, behind Portugal.

League C

Slovakia was an opponent of the Red Devils at the European Championship, and now faces Azerbaijan, Estonia, and Sweden. A good result is expected from Slovakia in this group, with Sweden as their main rival.

Another European Championship opponent of Belgium is Romania. That team won their group against the Belgians and can also achieve a good result in this group. Their opponents are Cyprus, Kosovo, and Lithuania.

In the third group of this league, no positions are set yet. Bulgaria, Luxembourg, and Northern Ireland all have a chance to win the group, after which they will also compete for second place. Their opponent is Belarus, which may find it just a bit too difficult.

Everything is still open in the last group of League C as well: Armenia, the Faroe Islands, Latvia, and North Macedonia all have a chance at promotion. In the FIFA World Ranking, only Armenia and North Macedonia are in the top 100, but perhaps Latvia and the Faroe Islands can surprise.

League D

In the last league, there are only two groups of three teams. The first group includes Gibraltar, Liechtenstein, and San Marino. These are three countries that have not had much success in international football, but against each other, there could still be some good football to watch.

Andorra, Malta, and Moldova are in the final group. Again, there are no big teams in this group, but the matches between these teams could still be interesting to watch.
