So far, the Champions League hasn’t been too kind to Vincent Kompany. The former Red Devil began his campaign with Bayern Munich on a high note, demolishing Dinamo Zagreb 9-2. However, subsequent losses to Aston Villa and Barcelona have put the German side in a precarious position. Bayern needs to shift the balance in their favor soon, or risk being left behind. Kompany is eyeing his first major Champions League victory against Paris Saint-Germain. PSG, however, has plenty of motivation of their own; sitting with only 4 points, they are currently ranked lower than Bayern. The stakes are high, and the Allianz Arena crowd could give Bayern the edge in what promises to be a thrilling match.

Club Brugge heads into their match brimming with confidence after a resounding 7-0 victory over Sint-Truiden. However, their next opponent, Celtic, presents a much sterner challenge. The Scottish side currently sits 15th in the Champions League standings, one spot above Club Brugge, who trail by a single point. The Belgian side already secured an away win against Sturm Graz (0-1) and defeated Aston Villa at home. Meanwhile, Celtic leads their domestic league and recently triumphed 3-1 against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
Liverpool has climbed to the top of their group during this round but remains in a precarious position. A loss to Real Madrid on Wednesday could see them quickly overtaken by teams like Inter Milan or Monaco. This is a scenario the Reds are desperate to avoid. On the other hand, Real Madrid urgently needs to collect points, as their Champions League performance has been subpar this season. The record holders have only 6 points from 4 matches. While relegation isn’t an immediate threat, remaining in Group 8–24 would force them into playoffs. Climbing into the top 8 is still possible, and the Madrid side will do everything they can to make it happen.

In the Europa League, Anderlecht will face Porto this week. The Mauves have performed well in Europe and are currently tied on points with teams like Ajax and Galatasaray after four matches. This places them ahead of clubs like Tottenham and Manchester United. Lazio Roma holds the top spot, but that could change depending on the outcome of this match. A win against Porto would see Anderlecht claim the group’s top spot. The Brussels side will draw confidence from last week’s commanding 6-0 win against Gent. Porto, meanwhile, occupies second place in their domestic league behind Sporting CP and is currently ranked 22nd in the Europa League.
In the same group, Tottenham will take on AS Roma. The Spurs have had a mixed season, sitting in 6th place in the Premier League and 7th in the Europa League. This match will be a test of their resilience against a struggling AS Roma. The Italian side is still reeling from their crisis, as evidenced by their 1-0 loss to Napoli after bringing veteran coach Claudio Ranieri back into the fold. A win against Tottenham could restore some of their reputation and rebuild confidence in the club. AS Roma is currently 12th in Serie A and 20th in the Europa League standings.
Finally, Union will face Twente. The Brussels-based club is competing in the Europa League but finds itself in 30th place—a disappointing position for last year’s Belgian Cup winners and title contenders. After four matches, Union has only managed to collect 2 points. Twente isn’t faring much better, with just 3 points to their name. This match will be a battle to escape the danger zone and possibly break into the top 24. A top-8 finish is virtually out of reach for both teams.
