Preview: Liverpool – Real Madrid

Liverpool

This week’s Champions League action features a clash of titans as current leader Liverpool takes on the ultimate record-holder, Real Madrid. On Wednesday, November 27, Liverpool will host Real Madrid in a highly anticipated matchup. With five direct challengers close behind, Liverpool is determined to defend its top spot fiercely, while Real Madrid aims to recover lost ground. Read all about it in this article.

Liverpool vs. Real Madrid

These two teams have faced each other 11 times, with Liverpool winning three of those encounters. Real Madrid, however, holds the statistical advantage, having secured victory seven times. The last time they met was in the Round of 16 in the 2022–2023 Champions League season. Real Madrid established a commanding lead in the first leg, winning 2-5 at Anfield, and extended their advantage at home with another goal.

If Liverpool wins this match, they are almost guaranteed to retain the lead in their group. With a two-point advantage over Sporting CP, Monaco, Brest, and Inter Milan, such a victory would put them in a stronger position. For Real Madrid, a win would bring them closer to the top six, as the record champions are currently underperforming.

Liverpool

Anfield, the home stadium of Liverpool FC, has been a fortress for the club founded in 1892 by former Everton chairman John Houlding. When Everton refused to purchase the land and opted for another stadium, Houlding decided to form his own club. Liverpool played its first match on September 1, 1892. The club enjoyed its golden years in the 1970s and 1980s but experienced a dip in performance before a resurgence under coach Jürgen Klopp starting in 2015.

Liverpool’s trophy cabinet includes 19 Premier League titles, 8 FA Cups, 6 Champions League titles, and 1 Club World Cup. This past summer, Klopp was succeeded by Dutch coach Arne Slot, who led Feyenoord to an Eredivisie title last year. Slot has proven his mettle at Liverpool, guiding the Reds to 10 wins in their first 12 matches, securing the top spot in the English Premier League. They now hold an 8-point lead over second-place Manchester City, last season’s title winners.

In the Champions League, Liverpool also leads their group, but the margin is narrow, with only two points separating them from five other teams. Much of their success is thanks to star forward Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian striker has scored 12 goals in 18 appearances across all competitions, placing him second in the Premier League’s top scorers list behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. Salah is hoping for a stellar season, as it is likely his last in a Liverpool jersey.

Real Madrid

As one of the two major clubs from Spain’s capital, alongside Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid is also one of the best teams globally. Founded on March 6, 1902, the club plays its home matches at the iconic Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Traditionally dressed in white, their away colors this season are gold and black. Real Madrid has won La Liga 36 times, the Copa del Rey 20 times, and the Champions League a record 15 times—far ahead of second-placed AC Milan, with 7 titles. FIFA even named Real Madrid the best football club of the 20th century.

After 13 matches in La Liga, Real Madrid sits second, just behind Barcelona, though the Catalan club has played one more game. In the domestic league, Los Blancos have lost just one match, while their other games ended in wins or draws. However, in the Champions League, they have already suffered defeats to Lille and Milan.

To achieve these results, a team needs world-class players, and coach Carlo Ancelotti certainly has an abundance of them. His squad includes Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and French superstar Kylian Mbappé. The latter, alongside Vinícius Júnior, forms a formidable attacking duo. Vinícius has scored 12 goals this season, while Mbappé has netted 9. Other standout players include Antonio Rüdiger, Dani Carvajal, Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler, and Luka Modric.
