Limburg derby: STVV vs Genk

Genk

This weekend, Limburg will host an exciting derby between two of its biggest teams: STVV welcomes Genk to Stayen. After their crushing defeat against Club Brugge, the Canaries have something to prove. However, the Genkies won’t go down without a fight. Read all about this match in this article.

STVV vs. Genk

In their last 20 encounters, Genk emerged victorious in exactly half of the matches. Sint-Truiden only managed to win three times, while seven matches ended in a draw. These stats may boost Genk’s confidence, but STVV has the home advantage.

The last derby, a Jupiler Pro League clash on October 20, ended with a Genk victory. The fiercely contested match seemed decided early, as Genk secured a two-goal lead just past the half-hour mark. However, STVV quickly responded, narrowing the gap within five minutes. Just before halftime, Genk scored their third goal. Despite STVV making it 3-2 later in the game, the score remained unchanged, with a total of five goals and two red cards.

Currently, Genk leads the Jupiler Pro League and aims to maintain their position. With a six-point lead over Club Brugge, they have a comfortable margin but can further strengthen their spot with three more points. STVV, sitting in 12th place, is just outside the relegation zone. Tied with OHL and only two points ahead of Cercle, they urgently need a win.

STVV

Founded in 1924, Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging (STVV) is registered with the Belgian Football Association under club number 373 and plays its home games at Stayen. They returned to the First Division in 2015 after spending three years in the Second Division. STVV has won the Belgian league title once and lifted the cup twice, though they have yet to claim any international trophies.

Last week, STVV suffered a harsh 7-0 loss against Club Brugge, with Greek forward Christos Tzolis scoring a hat-trick before halftime. However, given Club Brugge’s strength, this result might not fully reflect STVV’s potential. It was also the first major setback under coach Felice Mazzu. This defeat dropped STVV to 12th in the Jupiler Pro League. They are not participating in European competitions this year.

Adriano Bertaccini is STVV’s top scorer this season, with eight goals in 16 matches. His closest competitor, Andres Ferrari, has scored three.

Genk

Koninklijke Racing Club Genk was established in 1988 following a merger between Thor Waterschei and KFC Winterslag, inheriting the club number 322. Playing in blue and white, Genk hosts its matches at the Cegeka Arena. Since 1996, Genk has consistently played in Belgium’s First Division, winning the league four times and the Belgian Cup five times. They have also participated in the Champions League seven times.

Currently, Genk sits at the top of the Jupiler Pro League with a six-point lead over Club Brugge. Having won 11 of their 15 matches, coach Nicky Hayen has had an impressive debut season. In their latest match, Genk secured a 3-0 victory against Charleroi.

Tolu Arokodare briefly became the league’s top scorer with his ninth goal of the season, although Anderlecht’s Kasper Dolberg surpassed him with one more. Jarne Steuckers has scored seven for Genk, followed by Patrik Hrosovsky and Hyeon-gyu Oh with four goals each.
