Australian Open (Tennis) – January 12 to 26
The first major event on our calendar is the Australian Open. As the first Grand Slam of the tennis season, it marks an important start for many professionals. Defending singles champions are Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka.
Super Bowl LIX (American Football) – February 9
In February, one of the most significant events in American sports, the Super Bowl, takes place. This year, the game will be held at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, determining the winner of the 2024 National Football League season. The contenders are not yet known, but defending champions Kansas City Chiefs are currently leading their division and are strong contenders for another appearance.
Six Nations (Rugby Union) – February
In 2025, Ireland will aim to win the Six Nations Rugby Championship for the third consecutive year. The Irish achieved a Grand Slam in 2023, winning every match in the competition, but England disrupted their run in 2024. This year, France may pose the greatest challenge, led by star player Antoine Dupont, who won gold in rugby sevens at the Olympics. The competition also features Wales, Scotland, and Italy.
UEFA Europa League Final – May 21
Defending champions Atalanta Bergamo will not be able to retain their Europa League title, as they are now competing in the Champions League. This opens the door for clubs like Lazio and Athletic Bilbao, currently tied at the top of their groups. Union could also rise from 20th place to compete with Anderlecht at the top. The final will be held at the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao.
UEFA Champions League Final – May 31
As usual, the UEFA Champions League will culminate in a grand finale in 2025. On May 31, two finalists will compete for the title at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Defending champions Real Madrid are not currently in the group of eight automatically qualifying teams, and host team Bayern Munich is also struggling to make the cut. Club Brugge is the only Belgian team in contention, ranked 19th.
Giro d’Italia – May
The 2025 Giro d’Italia will start in Tirana, the capital of Albania. After recent editions, Slovenia boasts two Giro winners in Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic. While the route details are still scarce, it’s known that there will be two time trials and a return of the gravel roads of the Strade Bianche. The finish is expected at Piazza del Campo in Siena, with Roglic targeting the Giro as one of his main goals for the year.
FIFA Club World Cup – June 15 to July 13
Since 2000, FIFA has organized a club tournament every four years, and in 2025 the search for the world’s best club continues. The final is scheduled for July 13 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Defending champions Manchester City and invited club Inter Miami are among the participants.
UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 – July 2 to 27
In Switzerland, international women’s teams will compete for the European Championship title. Belgium’s Red Flames secured their spot in the playoffs and will face Spain, Portugal, and Italy in July. The final is set for July 27 at St. Jakob-Park in Basel.
Tour de France – Starting July 5
The 112th edition of the Tour de France kicks off on Saturday, July 5, in Lille and ends on Sunday, July 27, in Paris. Cyclists will cover approximately 3,320 kilometers across France. Defending champion Tadej Pogacar will return, but Remco Evenepoel could improve on his third-place finish. The women’s race begins a day before the men’s ends, with Demi Vollering seeking revenge against defending champion Katarzyna Niewiadoma.
Wimbledon (Tennis) – July
In July, tennis enthusiasts can enjoy Wimbledon. Last year, Carlos Alcaraz successfully defended his title, but it remains to be seen if he can do so again. On the women’s side, Barbora Krejcikova took the title from her compatriot Markéta Vondrousová.
Start of the Jupiler Pro League 2025-2026 – July
Late July marks the start of the new Belgian football season. The format remains unchanged, with the league concluding after 30 matchdays in March 2026. We’ll have to wait to see which team will begin as the defending champion.
World Darts Championship 2026
While the 2025 edition of the PDC World Darts Championship is not yet over, anticipation is already building for the next edition. Discussions are underway to expand the tournament from 96 to 128 players, potentially moving to a larger venue to accommodate more spectators.
AFCON 2025 – December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026
Unlike last year, when AFCON began on January 13, the 2025 tournament will start in December. Ivory Coast will defend their title at this biennial championship hosted by Morocco. The final is scheduled for January 28, 2026.
