Preview: Liverpool vs Manchester United

Liverpool

Liverpool and Manchester United will play their first match of the year against each other on Sunday, but this intercity derby is about more than just the points. Their rivalry has existed for ages, making this clash between the two most successful clubs in the country all the more intriguing. Read all about this match in this article.

North West Derby

These two clubs hail from two of the most important regions in North West England, which is why their match is often called the North West Derby. Geography is one of the reasons for their rivalry, but the region’s historical economy also plays a role. Since the Industrial Revolution, there has been competition between the two cities, especially in economic and cultural terms.

The last time they faced each other was on September 1, when Liverpool secured a 0-3 victory, with goals from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah. At that time, it was already clear that Manchester United was struggling with a serious dip in form this year.

Liverpool and Manchester United have more trophies in their cabinets than any other English clubs. Together, they have won a combined total of 39 league titles, 21 FA Cups, 16 League Cups, and numerous European trophies. It is therefore a clash of titans, but for one team, it is also a crucial match to avoid sinking further.

Liverpool

Anfield is the home ground of Liverpool FC, founded in 1892 by former Everton chairman John Houlding. When Everton refused to buy the land and chose another stadium, Houlding decided to establish his own club. Liverpool played its first match on September 1, 1892. The club enjoyed its greatest successes in the 1970s and 1980s before experiencing a dip in performance. However, under coach Jürgen Klopp, the team revived starting in 2015.

Liverpool has won the Premier League 19 times and the FA Cup 8 times, in addition to multiple Champions League titles and one Club World Cup. After several successful years, the Reds bid farewell to coach Jürgen Klopp last summer. His successor, Arne Slot, has had no trouble keeping the team performing at a high level. Liverpool currently holds a 6-point lead over second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League, having played one match less. They are also leading the League Phase of the Champions League and are set to face Tottenham Hotspur next week for an EFL Cup final ticket.

Much of this success is due to one man: Mohamed Salah. Across all competitions, the Egyptian star has tallied 20 goals and 17 assists in just 26 matches. However, there’s a problem—Salah may leave Anfield this summer. His contract with Liverpool is set to expire, and there’s still no agreement on a potential extension.

Manchester United

Founded in 1878, Manchester United is the most successful club in English football. Much of their glory can be attributed to Sir Alex Ferguson, who became the club’s manager in 1986. United has won the English league title 20 times and was the first-ever Premier League champion. Their home matches take place at the iconic Old Trafford.

For the Red Devils, the struggles continue to deepen. Coach Ruben Amorim and his team have yet to escape the poor form they’ve been in since the start of the season. In fact, they began the season under Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed due to poor results. Currently sitting 14th in the Premier League and 7th in the Europa League, there seems to be no improvement in sight.

The team lacks true standouts, though their lineup includes well-known names. In their recent loss to Newcastle, players such as Christian Eriksen, Rasmus Højlund, and Matthijs de Ligt featured prominently. And that’s not to mention those who didn’t start or take to the pitch, like top scorer Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Bruno Fernandes.
