Preview: Australian Open 2025

Open

In Australia, the qualifications for the Australian Open have begun. Several Belgian tennis players, as well as many tennis stars from around the world, will battle it out this week to earn a spot in the next round. Big names like Djokovic and Alcaraz are more determined than ever to claim the title, but it remains to be seen who will ultimately take home the trophy. Read all about this tournament in this article.

Australian Open

The 2025 edition marks the 113th edition of this prestigious tournament, and the first Grand Slam of the season. The tournament features events for professional players in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Juniors and wheelchair players also compete in singles and doubles. This year, the tournament kicks off on Sunday, January 12.

Men’s Singles

The defending champion is Jannik Sinner. The Italian was already training a week ago at the Rod Laver Arena, a special venue for him as it was where he won his first Grand Slam title a year ago. Since then, he has even risen to become the world’s number one, but he now faces the tough task of defending his title.

For Novak Djokovic, returning to Australia is still not easy, as he himself has admitted, three years after being denied entry. In 2022, the Serbian player was unvaccinated against COVID-19 and was therefore required to stay in a hotel before ultimately being deported. The following year, he returned and won the tournament for the tenth time. This year, he is aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title. In 2024, Djokovic completed his trophy collection by winning Olympic gold.

Carlos Alcaraz is also eager to lift the trophy. The young Spaniard has already won the US Open, Wimbledon, and the French Open, and is now chasing a Career Grand Slam. If he succeeds, he would become the youngest player in the Open Era (since 1968) to win all four major titles. In addition to his Wimbledon and Roland Garros victories, Alcaraz also helped Team Europe win the Laver Cup last year.

Women’s Singles

Aryna Sabalenka has been the strongest among the women for two years in a row. The Belarusian extended her 2023 title after defeating China’s Zheng Qinwen in the final. For Sabalenka, it was her second Grand Slam title at the time, and she added the US Open title to her collection in September. With a third consecutive victory, she would become the first woman to achieve this feat since Martina Hingis in 1999.

Iga Swiatek has dominated women’s tennis in recent years, but the Pole is determined to take another step forward. In October, she appointed Belgian Wim Fissette as her new coach. Swiatek lost her top spot in the WTA rankings to Aryna Sabalenka and now hopes to reclaim it while completing her Grand Slam collection. To achieve this, she still needs to win in Melbourne (Australian Open) and at Wimbledon. The “Queen of Clay” is eager to crown herself on grass as well.

The American Coco Gauff is also a contender for the Australian Open. She had little success at the Olympics, where she was eliminated in the round of 16 after a dispute with the umpire. However, Gauff did win several WTA titles last year and, for the first time in her career, captured the WTA Finals, defeating players like Aryna Sabalenka and Zheng Qinwen. Gauff currently ranks third in the WTA rankings.

Belgian Players

Among the Belgians, a few players have already secured a spot in the main draw. On the men’s side, David Goffin and Zizou Bergs will participate. Goffin will be looking to improve on last year, when he was eliminated in the first round despite a strong qualifying performance. This year has not started well for him either, with early losses in Brisbane and Adelaide. On the other hand, Bergs has had a strong start, winning all his matches so far this year.

Elise Mertens and Greet Minnen will also compete in the tournament. Mertens faced a minor setback in her first match, twisting her ankle in New Zealand. As a result, she started her season later in Australia, where she defeated Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz 6-3, 6-1. Greet Minnen reached the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Auckland but performed more impressively in Australia.
