W14: Weekend overview

Weekend Week-end

All over Europe, we’re in for another weekend full of thrilling matches. Many top clubs are fighting for crucial points in their domestic leagues, as in some competitions, the title winner is nearly decided. However, every match and every result can still shake up the standings. Read this article to discover the most interesting matches of the weekend and find out which games you shouldn’t miss.

Saturday, April 5

The first team to be relegated in Belgian football is already known: Beerschot. The Kiel Rats can no longer climb to 2nd place after losing to STVV and seeing Cercle Brugge draw against Kortrijk. This means they are condemned to the bottom two spots and, therefore, relegation. This weekend, they face Cercle, which is in a strong position to remain in the top division. After a successful season, including participation in the Conference League, Cercle Brugge must now fight to stay up. They are just one point behind STVV and six points ahead of Kortrijk. However, they will be eager to catch up with STVV, making this a crucial game they’ll want to win.

Also on Saturday, KAA Gent hosts Union at home. The Buffaloes started their Champions’ Play-offs campaign with a heavy blow from KRC Genk, losing 4-0. And with their opponent Union off to a strong start in the play-offs, securing a 5-1 win against Antwerp, the message is clear for KAA Gent: they urgently need points. History isn’t on their side, as they haven’t beaten Union since the latter’s return to the top flight. Still, they are not without a chance, and home advantage could play a significant role.

Sunday, April 6

Antwerp must recover from their heavy defeat against Union. The challenge is tough, as Club Brugge visits the Bosuil. The “Boeren” are determined to compete for the title, but they must fight for every point. Currently, Genk holds a four-point lead, which is becoming a dangerous gap for Club Brugge. However, the stats favor Antwerp: in their last four home games against Club, they won three times. The home advantage at Bosuil Stadium is undeniable, and Club Brugge will need to be prepared. But the visitors have already faced bigger challenges this year, especially in the Champions League, proving that they are a formidable opponent.

Sunday also brings us a new Manchester Derby. Manchester United welcomes city rivals Manchester City to the iconic Old Trafford. United is having a difficult season, hovering around mid-table in the Premier League, while Manchester City is still fighting for a European spot after some setbacks. This match is particularly crucial for City, as a win would put them in a Champions League qualification position. It promises to be an exciting encounter, especially with Erling Haaland absent due to injury. The big question is: how will City perform without their Norwegian goal machine, and can Manchester United win this derby for pride?

KRC Genk started the Champions’ Play-Offs in style with a 4-0 win over AA Gent, reinforcing their title ambitions. This weekend, they need to confirm their dominance with a visit to RSC Anderlecht. So far, Racing can be pleased with their season under new coach Thorsten Fink. His project has been a major success, resulting in a strong play-off position. Against Anderlecht, Genk has already won twice this season. If Brugge loses to Antwerp, Genk will be in an excellent position in the title race.

In the Europe Play-offs, everything is still possible, but Standard currently holds a one-point lead. This weekend, they have a chance to solidify their position with a visit to Charleroi. They could have done so last week but let their lead slip twice against KV Mechelen. Charleroi, meanwhile, also failed to go beyond a draw against OH Leuven. This match is crucial for the further course of the Europe Play-offs. The winner of these play-offs still has a chance to earn a European ticket.
