This weekend, there are once again plenty of matches worth watching. Not only in Belgium, but all across Europe, top clubs are battling for crucial points in their respective leagues. And with the title races heating up, every match becomes even more exciting. Read in this article about the most interesting matches of this weekend.
Saturday, April 26
Chelsea – Everton
In England, Chelsea are still chasing a Champions League qualification spot. The London team is now just one point away, level with Aston Villa. But the Blues can change that this week if they beat Everton. The latter no longer have a chance of securing a European ticket, but that doesn’t mean they’ll go down without a fight. Their previous encounter in December ended in a draw, while Chelsea came out on top last season with a dominant 6-0 home victory. This match also seems to be leaning in Chelsea’s favor, especially since they once again have the home advantage at Stamford Bridge.
Sunday, April 27
Gent – Anderlecht
There’s a crisis at Gent. After two consecutive 5-0 defeats, there seems to be little hope left for the Buffaloes. Especially after their loss to Club Brugge, there was still a sense of revenge, but that quickly disappeared thanks to Kasper Dolberg and his teammates at Anderlecht. On Sunday, Gent face the Mauves once again, who will travel to the Planet Group Arena with renewed confidence. Still, that win against Gent was very welcome for Anderlecht, as the Brussels side had just suffered four straight losses, including one against Westerlo just two matches earlier. The big question remains: is Anderlecht truly back, or was it just a one-off?
Genk – Antwerp
Following Club Brugge’s win and Genk’s loss on matchday 5, the Farmers became the new league leaders. It’s clear Genk wants to reclaim the top spot, but they’ll need to win again to do so. That’s something they couldn’t manage in Antwerp, where the match ended in a 1-1 draw. For the Great Old, breaking into the top 3 is no longer possible, but that doesn’t mean they won’t aim to win every match. We’re expecting an exciting clash at the Cegeka Arena, with big implications for the title race.
Liverpool – Tottenham
This weekend could be Liverpool’s most important match of the season. If the Reds beat Tottenham, they will be crowned champions of England. After their loss to PSG in the Champions League and their elimination from the FA Cup, the league title is the only major prize left to win. And they can secure it this weekend by beating a struggling Tottenham side. Coach Ange Postecoglou’s team suffered their 18th league defeat of the season on Monday and currently sit in 16th place. Interestingly, the Spurs did manage to reach the Europa League semi-finals. Still, this match looks likely to go Liverpool’s way, and Arne Slot could become the first Dutch coach to win the Premier League title.
Union – Club Brugge
Union have blown the Jupiler Pro League title race wide open with their victory at the Jan Breydel Stadium. The Unionists took the lead before halftime and held on for the rest of the match. That win now puts Union at the top of the table, making the title race more competitive than ever between the top three. With 15 out of 15 points in the playoffs, the team from Saint-Gilles remains flawless, and there’s no sign they’ll let that streak go easily. On Sunday, they’ll host the Farmers again. Club Brugge will be eager to take points home this time. It’s already been a very successful season for Club Brugge, with a strong Champions League run to show for it, but the reigning champions are still hungry for another league title. So on Sunday, we’ll find out whether Club Brugge can ramp up the pressure on the other two teams, or if Union will extend their lead.
