Croky Cup Final: Club Bruge vs RSC Anderlecht

Anderlecht

Club Brugge and Anderlecht battle it out on Sunday to decide who will lift the Belgian Cup this year. In a single match at the King Baudouin Stadium, these players will have to give it their all. Read all about it in this article.

Croky Cup

Since 2015, the Belgian Cup has been known as the Croky Cup, although the tournament has existed since 1908. Over the years, Club Brugge has claimed the most victories: the West Flemish club boasts an impressive 11 cup wins. Anderlecht and Standard follow with 9 and 8 wins respectively. The current titleholder is Union, which defeated Antwerp in last year’s final. The cup winner receives a trophy and qualifies for the UEFA Europa League qualifiers and the Belgian Super Cup.

Union started this year’s cup competition as the defending champion, but has already been knocked out by Antwerp. In a rematch of last year’s final, the Great Old triumphed with a crushing 5-1 victory. But Antwerp has since also been eliminated—by Anderlecht. Club Brugge, for its part, took care of OHL and Genk.

Club Brugge – Anderlecht

Blauw-Zwart (Blue-Black) once again showcased their quality on Thursday by defeating Gent 4-1 at their own Jan Breydel Stadium. Anderlecht has been warned, but there is hope for Paars-Wit (Purple-White) as well. They also secured a win—against Antwerp. Both teams head into the Cup Final with confidence.

This could be the perfect moment for the Mauves. Anderlecht has won three consecutive matches, including a 5-0 win over Gent. The Brussels side is in great form, while Club Brugge managed only one point in two matches against Union. Club Brugge is still competing for the league title, whereas Anderlecht no longer has to worry about that. So we’re hoping for an exciting clash this Sunday at the King Baudouin Stadium.

Club Brugge

This club was founded on November 13, 1891, and holds registration number 3. Since 1959, it has played continuously in the Jupiler Pro League, the highest division in Belgian football. Of the two Bruges clubs—Cercle Brugge and Club—Club is by far the more successful and popular. It has won the national title 18 times. Only RSC Anderlecht has more league titles in Belgium. In total, no other club has won more cups and super cups than Club Brugge. It is also the only Belgian team ever to reach the final of the European Cup I, now known as the Champions League.

That won’t happen this year, as Club Brugge was eliminated in the round of 16 by Aston Villa. Nevertheless, the “Boeren” (Farmers) are clearly having another strong season, sitting second in the Jupiler Pro League and reaching the cup final.

It’s long been clear that Club Brugge boasts a world-class squad. With players like Hans Vanaken, Christos Tzolis, and Ferran Jutglà, the club has climbed back to the top. A decision even needs to be made about the goalkeeper for this weekend: Simon Mignolet is the obvious first choice, but Nordin Jackers has proven himself multiple times this season and also played the other cup matches.

RSC Anderlecht

Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht was founded on May 27, 1908, and is registered with the Belgian Football Association under number 35. The club’s colors are purple and white, and it plays its home matches at Lotto Park. RSCA has competed in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League since 1935. It has won the league title 34 times—more than any other Belgian club. Anderlecht has also seen success in European competition: it has won the European Cup Winners’ Cup twice, the UEFA Super Cup twice, and the UEFA Cup once.

However, this season has been inconsistent for Anderlecht, as its European journey ended early. The Mauves couldn’t get past Turkish side Fenerbahçe in the Europa League, despite some hope after Luis Vázquez scored twice. But an early goal by Youssef En-Nesyri and an equalizer from Yusuf Akcicek made it too difficult for the Brussels side to continue.

That’s why Anderlecht is determined to secure this trophy. And with Kasper Dolberg up front, they have a striker who knows how to score—the Dane has already netted 24 goals this season. In addition, Anderlecht boasts plenty of quality on the field with Jan Vertonghen, Thorgan Hazard, and Luis Vázquez.
