This weekend, decisive matches will be played in the title race. One of the highlights is the top clash between Anderlecht and Club Brugge, where the Bruges side cannot afford to drop any points. The tension remains high, especially given the recent friction between Anderlecht and Club. Read all about it in this article.
RSC Anderlecht – Club Brugge
The rivalry between these two teams has clearly been ongoing for many years. Anderlecht and Club Brugge are two of the most successful clubs in Belgium, often facing each other in crucial matches. That was also the case in this year’s Croky Cup, where Club Brugge defeated the Mauves 2-1. However, the match was marred by clashes between supporters, resulting in Club fans now being banned from travelling to Lotto Park. This will undoubtedly put Blue-Black at a disadvantage.
Still, we give Club Brugge a higher chance of winning this match. Club has been playing at a high level all year—perhaps slightly less dominant than last season, but look at their performance in the Champions League. Club Brugge is expected to win this match as well. However, the title will not yet be decided—everything will come down to the final matchday. Anderlecht will not want to let it come to that and will do everything they can to snatch the title from Club Brugge.
RSC Anderlecht
Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht was founded on May 27, 1908, and is affiliated with the Belgian Football Association under registration number 35. Their club colors are purple and white, and they play their home matches at Lotto Park. RSCA has been playing in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League since 1935. With thirty-four national titles, Anderlecht is the most successful club in Belgian football history.
On the European stage, Anderlecht has also seen success: they have won the European Cup Winners’ Cup twice, the UEFA Super Cup twice, and the UEFA Cup once.
This season, however, has been inconsistent for Anderlecht. Their European campaign ended early, as they failed to get past Turkish side Fenerbahçe in the Europa League, despite hope after Luis Vázquez scored twice. But an early goal by Youssef En-Nesyri and an equalizer by Yusuf Akcicek made it too difficult for the Mauves to write a successful European story. Anderlecht also failed to win the domestic cup. In the Jupiler Pro League, they are currently 4th in the Champions Play-offs—good enough for a Europa League ticket for now. But if they take 0 out of 6 points and Antwerp takes 6 out of 6, they could lose that spot as well.
Anderlecht will therefore aim to hinder their opponents as much as possible. With Kasper Dolberg up front, they have a striker who knows how to score—the Dane has already found the net 24 times this season. Alongside him, Anderlecht also boasts quality players like Jan Vertonghen, Thorgan Hazard, and Luis Vázquez.
Club Brugge
Club Brugge was founded on November 13, 1891, and holds registration number 3. Since 1959, they have been playing continuously in the Jupiler Pro League, the top tier of Belgian football. Of the two Bruges clubs—Cercle Brugge and Club—Club Brugge is the more successful and popular. They have won the league title eighteen times. Only RSC Anderlecht has more Belgian titles.
No other Belgian club has won more domestic cups and super cups than Club Brugge. They are also the only Belgian club to have ever reached the final of the European Cup I, now known as the Champions League. That won’t happen this year, as Club Brugge was eliminated in the round of 16 by Aston Villa. Still, the Blauw-Zwart (Blue-Black) are clearly having another strong season. They are currently in 2nd place in the Jupiler Pro League and have already won the domestic cup. As mentioned earlier, much is riding on this match for Club. If Union beats Antwerp and Club Brugge fails to win against Anderlecht, the title will go to Union. If Union loses, more possibilities remain.
It has long been clear that Club Brugge possesses a squad of world-class talent. With players like Hans Vanaken, Christos Tzolis, and Ferran Jutglà, the team has climbed to the top once again this year. There was some uncertainty around the goalkeeper position during the cup run: while Simon Mignolet is the undisputed number one, it was Nordin Jackers who featured in all the cup matches.
