Preview: Champions League Final

Champions

On Saturday, May 31, the UEFA Champions League final will be played at the Allianz Arena in Munich between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan. Remarkably, for the first time in 21 years, no team from the Premier League, Bundesliga, or La Liga will feature in the final. And since these two teams have never faced each other before, this promises to be an intriguing clash. Read all about it in this article.

Champions League Final: PSG – Inter

The final promises to be a tactical battle between two dynamic teams. Luis Enrique’s PSG plays with a high tempo and dominant possession, focusing on a strong midfield and rapid attack. Their offensive performance is impressive: with 33 goals in 16 matches, they are the second-highest scoring team in the competition. They frequently attack down the flanks using speedy wingers.

However, Inter Milan is confident they can contain the wingers, relying on a solid defense and tactical ball control. This is evident in their results: they have lost just one of their 14 Champions League matches and are currently on an eight-match unbeaten streak. Their strong foundation allows them to launch quick counterattacks, often through advancing wing-backs. Inzaghi is also known for making tactical adjustments during the match.

PSG

Although the Parisian powerhouse has often found domestic success, PSG is still chasing its very first Champions League title. Since the Qatari takeover, this has been the club’s primary objective. This is only PSG’s second appearance in a final — the last time was in 2020 under coach Thomas Tuchel. The summer of 2023 and Mbappé’s departure in 2024 marked the end of the “Galáctico” era, which also included Messi and Neymar. Coach Luis Enrique, who won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015, believed change was needed after 2023.

PSG began this season with several squad changes. Their group stage performance was inconsistent, with four wins, one draw, and three losses in their first eight matches. However, they found their form in the knockout stage, eliminating Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal — all English teams. Domestically, they went unbeaten in Ligue 1 and also claimed the Coupe de France.

The midfield trio of Joao Neves, Vitinha, and Fabián Ruiz is vital for PSG. In attack, Ousmane Dembélé is a key player. Despite a recent injury, he is expected to be fit in time for the final. A good partnership with Bradley Barcola will be crucial to break through Inter’s defense, after which the ball can hopefully reach Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. In goal stands Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has been outstanding in the run-up to the final.

Inter

Inter Milan is chasing their fourth European title. Their most recent Champions League win came in 2010 under José Mourinho, and this will be their seventh appearance in a final. Under coach Simone Inzaghi, Inter also reached the final two years ago, narrowly losing 1–0 to Manchester City. Although Inter also won Serie A twice in the last four seasons, this final marks a shift in the club’s priorities. They led the Italian league for much of the season, but their recent focus has clearly been on the Champions League. Inzaghi has already won six major trophies with Inter, and a continental crown would be the cherry on top.

Inter had a consistent journey to the final this season. They started strong, with four wins in their first five games and no goals conceded. They finished fourth in their group, which sent them straight to the Round of 16. In the knockout phase, they eliminated Feyenoord, then Bayern Munich, and finally Barcelona in a dramatic two-legged tie. Inter has lost only one of their 14 Champions League matches this season and is currently on an eight-match unbeaten run in the tournament.

Inzaghi’s squad leans on experience, with players like 37-year-old Francesco Acerbi and 36-year-old goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who is currently regarded as one of the best keepers in Europe. Midfielders Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Hakan Calhanoglu are also seasoned players, expected to help initiate attacks. Up front, they have Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram, both key players offering speed and power. There are still injury doubts surrounding Benjamin Pavard and midfielder Piotr Zielínski, who would be valuable assets if fit to play.
