Preview: NBA Finals

NBA

The NBA Finals are the climax of the basketball season, where the champion of the United States is determined in a best-of-seven series. This means that the first team to win four games takes home the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. Tensions are high—if the Oklahoma City Thunder win the next game, the tournament is over and the winner is known. There’s an incredible amount at stake. Read all about it in this article.

Oklahoma City Thunder

The OKC Thunder have been incredibly strong this season, led by the NBA’s most valuable player and boasting one of the best defenses in the league. They now stand one win away from their very first NBA championship as an Oklahoma City team. They won Game 5 with a score of 120-109, showing what they’re capable of. They racked up a lot of points and shot far better than in the previous game, where they had struggled a bit more.

The absolute standout of that NBA game was Jalen Williams, who scored no less than 40 points. He also had an outstanding game in terms of rebounds and assists. He now joins a very small group of young players who have scored that many points in an NBA Finals game, alongside legends like Russell Westbrook and Magic Johnson. Williams’ rise has been lightning-fast—he has quickly developed into one of the top players in the league.

Alongside Williams, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander—this season’s NBA Most Valuable Player—also played brilliantly, with 31 points and 10 assists. SGA now joins the history books alongside legends such as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant for the number of high-scoring games in the playoffs.

Defensively, Oklahoma City was dominant in Game 5. They forced Indiana into no fewer than 23 turnovers, allowing OKC to break away more easily and score efficiently. The Thunder, by comparison, only turned the ball over 11 times. A key player in that defense was Chet Holmgren.

The only remaining concern for the Thunder is their performance in away games. They’ll need to prove they can play just as well in Indianapolis, in their opponent’s arena.

Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers have impressed with a remarkable NBA postseason run, but now find themselves with their backs against the wall. They lost Game 5, marking the first time since mid-March that they’ve lost two games in a row. Game 6 is a win-or-go-home scenario for them.

Their biggest issue in Game 5 was ball control. The Pacers, who normally prioritize ball security, committed 23 turnovers, opening the door for many easy points for the Thunder. Especially in the final stretch of the game, Indiana lost the ball four times in a row, allowing Oklahoma City to seal the victory.

The star of the Pacers is Tyrese Haliburton. He struggled in Game 5, playing with a calf injury and scoring just 4 points. His availability for Game 6 remains uncertain, as he still needs to undergo a scan. Still, he is likely to play if he’s able to walk again.

In Game 5, it was T.J. McConnell who stepped up. He scored a lot of points in the third quarter, helping Indiana stay within reach of the Thunder. If Haliburton is unable to play in Game 6, McConnell will need to step up even more. Pascal Siakam also delivered a strong performance with 28 points, and Obi Toppin made a great impression as well.

Despite the two losses, coach Rick Carlisle’s team has a solid reputation in crucial games. His teams have often come through when it really mattered. This upcoming game will also be played after two full days of rest, which may work in the Pacers’ favor.

Game 6: Decisive Match or a Game 7 to Come?

Game 6 will take place on Thursday, June 19, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. For the Oklahoma City Thunder, a win would mean claiming their first NBA championship in franchise history. It would be the crowning achievement of a spectacular season and the rapid development of their young, talented core.

For the Indiana Pacers, it’s a matter of survival. A win is absolutely necessary to keep their NBA season alive. If the Pacers manage to win, they will force a decisive Game 7, to be played on Sunday in Oklahoma City.

Game 6 promises to be incredibly exciting, with the Thunder looking to seize their historic opportunity and the Pacers fighting for one final breath in the Finals. Haliburton’s performance and the Pacers’ ability to limit turnovers will be crucial for the home team.
