On Monday, June 30, a new edition of Wimbledon, the beloved tennis tournament, will begin. For nearly two weeks, the search will be on for the best grass-court tennis player, culminating in the finals on Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13. Carlos Alcaraz will be aiming to defend his men’s title, while Barbora Krejcikova may face a tough challenge among the women due to injuries. Read all about it in this article.
Wimbledon 2025
Wimbledon, officially known as The Championships, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is considered the most prestigious. It is one of the four Grand Slams and the only one played on grass courts. This year, a record prize pool of nearly 63 million euros will be awarded.
Men’s Singles
Carlos Alcaraz is the two-time defending champion and has already delivered impressive results on grass, with only one loss on this surface since his debut in 2023. He arrives at Wimbledon on an 18-match winning streak and recently claimed his second consecutive Queen’s Club title. His strong comeback victory against Jannik Sinner in the Roland Garros final gives him even more confidence. It’s fair to say Alcaraz is the top favorite, and expectations are high for him to win his sixth Grand Slam title.
However, that same Jannik Sinner, currently ranked world No. 1, will be eager to take revenge after his Roland Garros final loss. He did win the Australian Open earlier this year and now hopes to capture his first Grand Slam title on grass. In his previous two Wimbledon appearances, he reached the quarterfinals and the semifinals.
Novak Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, remains a serious contender. At 38 years old, he is still chasing a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title and an eighth Wimbledon trophy, which would equal Roger Federer’s record. Djokovic has played in the last six Wimbledon finals—if he can repeat that feat, he could once again make history. But if he comes face-to-face with Sinner or Alcaraz, things could get tough.
At home, Jack Draper hopes to make a strong impression. The young Londoner is the highest-seeded Brit in the tournament and recently climbed to No. 4 in the world after winning the BNP Paris Open. Other notable contenders include Alexander Zverev and American players Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.
Women’s Singles
Last year, Barbora Krejcikova defeated Jasmine Paolini in three sets, but it doesn’t look like she’ll repeat that success this year. The Czech player withdrew from a tournament in Eastbourne due to a thigh injury and is uncertain about her recovery. That’s why it may be more interesting to look at other contenders.
Aryna Sabalenka, the current world No. 1, returns to Wimbledon this year after a two-year absence due to injury. Although she reached the finals at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros this year, Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam where she hasn’t played a final yet. She has already reached two semifinals and, as a three-time Grand Slam winner, should not be underestimated.
Coco Gauff, ranked No. 2 and both a US Open and Roland Garros champion, will try to improve on her previous Wimbledon performances. Her breakthrough came at Wimbledon in 2019, when she defeated five-time champion Venus Williams at age 15. However, she has never made it past the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Another top contender is Iga Swiatek. She is already a five-time Grand Slam champion, although her best Wimbledon result was a quarterfinal in 2023. While she may not be the strongest player on grass, she certainly has the potential to go far with a bit of luck.
Britain also has some strong players in the women’s draw. Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, has made a solid return this year and reclaimed her status as the British No. 1. The current British No. 2, Katie Boulter, also performs well on grass. While not a household name, she consistently reaches the knockout stages of major tournaments.
Other names to watch include Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, and Jasmine Paolini, who reached the final last year. If they’re in good form and get favorable matchups, they could very well reach the final again.
