Sports Betting: System Bets Explained

Systeemweddenschappen System Système

In the dynamic world of sports betting, players are constantly looking for strategies to optimize their chances. In addition to traditional single and multiple bets, the system bet offers an attractive alternative, mainly due to its ability to spread risk. With this type of bet, you don’t need all your predictions to be correct in order to receive a payout. This is a key difference compared to an accumulator, where a single mistake results in losing the entire stake.

What are system bets?

A system bet starts with selecting multiple predictions, also called “tips” or “selections,” usually a minimum of three. Once these are on your bet slip, the option for a system bet will appear. The bookmaker then automatically generates all possible combinations of these predictions, depending on the chosen system. In effect, you are placing multiple separate bets.

For example, if you choose four matches (A, B, C, D) and play a “2/4 system,” the bookmaker creates six doubles (AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD). If one of your four predictions, say D, turns out to be wrong, you lose the combinations that include D (AD, BD, CD), but you can still win the combinations that are correct (AB, AC, BC). This distinction is crucial and significantly increases the chance of a return compared to a straight accumulator.

As for the stake, in system bets it is placed per combination. If you choose a system that results in twenty combinations and you bet €1 per combination, your total stake will be €20. The total stake can rise quickly due to the number of combinations. The payout is determined by the odds of the winning combinations. The individual odds within a winning combination are multiplied together to calculate the odds of that combination. The total winnings are the sum of the payouts from all winning combinations. In some cases, a general stake for the entire bet slip is divided evenly across all combinations.

There are many different types of system bets, each with a unique number of selections and combinations. Popular examples include:

  • Yankee: Four selections result in eleven bets (six doubles, four trebles, one fourfold). You win if at least two predictions are correct.
  • Trixie: Three selections produce four bets (three doubles, one treble). At least two predictions must be correct.
  • Canadian (Super Yankee): Five selections form 26 bets.
  • Goliath: The most extensive system with eight selections and no fewer than 247 bets.
  • Lucky 15, Lucky 31, Lucky 63 and Patent: These systems include singles alongside combinations, meaning even one correct prediction can be enough for a minimal payout.

An advanced strategy is the use of a “banker.” This is a selection you are extremely confident will win. A banker is included in all combinations within your system bet, which can increase the potential payout. However, if the banker loses, all combinations including it are also lost.

Advantages of system bets:

  • Risk diversification: You can still win even if not all predictions are correct.
  • Partial winnings: You may recover part of your stake or even make a profit with just some correct predictions.
  • Flexible strategy: Suitable for players seeking more control and depth in their bets.
  • More frequent payouts: Thanks to the possibility of partial wins, you may see returns more often.

 Disadvantages of system bets:

  • Complexity: The many combinations and payout structures can be confusing for beginners.
  • Higher total stake: Since you bet per combination, the overall stake can be much higher than with singles or accumulators.
  • Lower overall payout: The winnings per combination are smaller than with a fully correct accumulator, as the stake is spread across more bets.
  • Partial winnings may not cover the stake: It’s possible that the payout from winning combinations is lower than your total stake, resulting in a net loss.
  • Less suitable for small budgets: Because of the higher stake requirement, system bets are not ideal for players with limited funds.

In short, system bets provide an advanced and less risky approach to sports betting. They are particularly well-suited for the strategic bettor who wants to enhance the excitement of betting by minimizing risks and securing more frequent payouts—provided one understands the complexity and higher stake involved.
