31/08: Super Sunday!

Super

We can once again look forward to a ‘Super Sunday’ on Sunday, August 31. On this day, top matches will take place across Europe that will further shape the competitions in various countries. Here we discuss the most important fixtures you shouldn’t miss.

Gent – Club Brugge

As early as 1:30 PM, KAA Gent will play the ‘Battle of Flanders’ against Club Brugge in their own Planet Group Arena. It is high time for Gent to collect some points, because with only 4 points after an equal number of matches, we can speak of a less-than-stellar start. Club Brugge, on the other hand, has done well, having already collected 9 points. This puts them in 4th place. But the ‘Boeren’ (farmers) will not let the victory slip through their hands easily, as they want to take the lead as quickly as possible.

KAA Gent and Club Brugge last faced each other on May 1st of this year. In the final stretch towards the title, it was important for both teams to win this match. Ultimately, it was ‘Blauw-Zwart’ (Blue-Black) that went home with the 3 points, with a score of 4-1.

Liverpool – Arsenal

Later in the evening in England, Liverpool and Arsenal will play against each other. These two top teams had an excellent season last year, with Liverpool winning the Premier League and Arsenal reaching the semi-finals in the Champions League. The ‘Gunners’ of Arsenal were also very strong in the domestic league, but ultimately finished in 2nd place. ‘The Reds’ from Liverpool then had a 10-point lead. This year too, it will hopefully be an exciting battle between the two teams, as Arsenal currently leads and Liverpool is in 3rd place, both with 6 points.

Liverpool and Arsenal last played against each other on May 11th. In that match, The Reds quickly took the lead, with goals from Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz in the 20th and 21st minutes. Arsenal equalized with goals just after half-time and in the 70th minute, but could not get ahead. The final score remained 2-2.

Union SG – Anderlecht

Again in Belgium, on Sunday evening, we also have a Brussels derby. Union hosts fellow Brussels team Anderlecht in their own Joseph Mariënstadion. The rivalry between these two teams has grown more and more in recent years, as Union has become stronger and stronger since their return to 1A. Their title from last season more than testifies to that. Anderlecht, on the other hand, wants to do better again after a number of disappointing seasons. At the moment, they are doing well, as the ‘Mauves’ (Purples) are in 3rd place with 9 points. Only STVV, with 13 points, and Union, with 11 points, are doing better. A victory against Union would therefore be a very good thing for Anderlecht.

Their last head-to-head duel was on February 23rd. Visiting the Lotto Park, Union was too strong for Anderlecht, and the match ended 0-2. Goal scorers were Anan Khalaili and Ousseynou Niang. It wasn’t really a duel then, but perhaps Anderlecht can make the match a bit more exciting this time.

Lyon – Marseille

For the last match on Sunday, we head to France for an interesting duel between Olympique Lyon and Olympique Marseille. These two teams almost always finish nicely at the top of the French league, and a kind of rivalry has therefore arisen between the two. The head-to-head duels are also called the ‘Choc des Olympiques’ or ‘Derby des Olympiques’. This year, such matches could well be decisive if one of them wants to compete with PSG. At the moment, Lyon has as many points as the French title champion, Marseille lags somewhat behind with 3 points. If Lyon maintains a strong form, it has a chance to break the PSG title streak. The last time Lyon won the title was in 2008, after a 7-year title streak. Marseille won 2 years later.

The last ‘Derby des Olympiques’ was played on February 2nd. In a goal-filled match, it was Olympique Marseille that managed to secure the victory. They ended the match with a 3-2 score. It did help their title campaign a bit, but they still couldn’t compete with PSG, who would eventually win by a 19-point difference.
