From Sunday 12 November, the world’s best tennis players will play for the title in the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, the final tournament of the ATP Tour season. The final is scheduled for 19 November. Will Novak Djokovic achieve a record number of wins, or will it still be one of the underdogs who will take the upper hand?
General
The event will feature the world’s best eight players, who will be divided into two groups of four. The top two from each group will then advance to the semi-finals. The draw for this format will be made on Thursday 9 November. The total amount that can be won is $15,000,000, or just over €14,000,000. The winner will receive a record sum of more than $4.8 million or €4.5 million.
Record holders are Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, with both having six wins. But not only Djokovic has won the tournament before; Zverev, Tsitsipas and Medvedev have also been successful. They are also playing again this year.
Novak Djokovic
The ‘Big Titles King’ is the favourite to win this tournament too. After his 40th Masters 1000 title in Paris, he can also win the ATP Finals for a seventh time, setting a new record. Currently, he is still tied with Roger Federer, who could also win six times. He also played strongly again this season, with victories in the Australian Open, the US Open, and in Cincinnati, Paris and Adelaide.
Carlos Alcaraz
The world number two lost early in the Masters tournament in Paris, but he has already proved that he is worth his place at this tournament. He won his first Grand Slam, the US Open, in 2022. Since his Wimbledon title in July, when he managed to beat Djokovic in a thrilling five-setter, he has been on a huge roll. His other titles include Indian Wells and Madrid.
Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev was also soon forced to pack up at the Paris tournament, but there was also some controversy after he allegedly raised his middle finger to the crowd. He was clearly irritated by the spectators but, according to himself, would have just been looking at his nails. The No 3 in the ATP ranking already won the tournament in 2020 and was a finalist in 2021. Since February, he has already won 26 of 27 matches, winning in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai. After losing to Carlos Alcaraz in Indian Wells, he did manage to win again in Miami.
Jannik Sinner
The Italian left the European Open in Antwerp, but would be there for this tournament. He is ranked fourth in the ATP ranking, but has not yet been able to win a Grand Slam. He did reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon and won the Canadian Open in August, his first career Masters title. He also won in Montpellier and Beijing, where he beat both Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev. It will be his first participation in this tournament.
Andrey Rublev
Rublev gave Novak Djokovic a hard time in the Masters tournament in Paris, and the two featherweights may come face-to-face again in this tournament. He already achieved 50 wins for the third year in a row this year. In Monte-Carlo, he also won his first ATP Masters 1000 title. After several more wins and final places, he can count himself among the top eight for the fourth year in a row.
Stefanos Tsitsipas
Tsitsipas is also already known in Turin. The Greek is playing for the fifth time in a row and won the tournament in 2019. In Paris, he was able to knock out German Alexander Zverev. He did not achieve a lot of victories this year, but he did get many high places. For instance, he got to at least the quarter-finals in all the ATP Masters 1000 clay court tournaments.
Alexander Zverev
Zverev recently received a huge fine for assault, but is now on the entry list. He has already managed to win the tournament twice: in 2018 and 2021. Coming back from an ankle injury, Zverev emotionally celebrated his first title after his injury at the Hamburg European Open. He now seems to have found renewed energy.
Holger Rune
The Dane enjoyed a fast start to the season. He won the title in the ATP 250 in Munich, and stood in two ATP Masters 1000 finals. He also already made things difficult for world number one Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Masters 1000 tournament in Paris. The 20-year-old also got as far as the semi-finals in Montpellier, Acapulco, Queen’s Club and Basel.
