EURO 2024: Matchday 3 Group Stage

Speeldag, Matchday, Journée

The third matchday is already the last of the group stage of the European Championship. On this day, the final standings in the groups will be determined, and we will know which teams advance to the next round. The first match of this third matchday is on Sunday, June 23rd.

Group A: Sunday, June 23

Host country Germany, which wants to profile itself again as a strong football nation after a few less successful years, plays its last match of this group stage against Switzerland. The Germans easily secured the victory against Scotland, but Switzerland also won the first match against Hungary. It is therefore likely that Germany or Switzerland will become the group winner. The other team will then be second and also advance to the next round. After Switzerland – Germany, Scotland and Hungary will also play a match.

  • Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt: Switzerland – Germany
  • Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart: Scotland – Hungary

Group B: Monday, June 24

The top fixture of Spain against Croatia is already behind us, but the one between Spain and Italy is yet to come. It promises to be interesting because Spain and Italy are both currently at the top. The team that wins the head-to-head match will suddenly be 3 points ahead. That could be enough for the group win. On the last matchday, we will have another interesting match between Croatia and Italy. Spain will play against Albania on that day.

  • Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf: Albania – Spain
  • Red Bull Arena in Leipzig: Croatia – Italy

Group C: Tuesday, June 25

England won against Serbia on the first matchday and saw Denmark draw with Slovenia. The English thus go into the second matchday with a slight lead. It will be important for England because with a win against Denmark, they would almost be certain of the group win. On the last matchday, they will play against Slovenia. Denmark will then face Serbia.

  • Allianz Arena in Munich: Denmark – Serbia
  • RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne: England – Slovenia

Group D: Tuesday, June 25

The Netherlands immediately made a good start by winning against Poland. Because they scored more goals than France, which won 1-0 against Austria, they are in the first place. The Netherlands must also hold on against the strong France on the second matchday, which still has to wait for the outcome of Kylian Mbappé’s collision during the match against Austria. Poland or Austria could also move up, but it is much more difficult for them.

  • Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund: France – Poland
  • Olympiastadion in Berlin: Netherlands – Austria

Group E: Wednesday, June 26

Belgium lost 0-1 to Slovakia on the first matchday, as the Slovaks immediately punished a bad pass from Jérémy Doku. The Belgians then had enough chances to score the equalizer, but Romelu Lukaku failed each time. Belgium still has to play against Romania, and on the last matchday, Ukraine will be the opponent. To become the group winner, Belgium must win twice more, but the Red Devils can also advance as the second.

  • Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt: Slovakia – Romania
  • Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart: Ukraine – Belgium

Group F: Wednesday, June 26

It is no surprise that Portugal is the top favorite to win the group. After that, it gets exciting: Turkey has some star players, namely Hakan Calhanoglu from Inter Milan and Arda Guler from Real Madrid. They have a good chance of finishing second in their group. They are mainly challenged by the Czech Republic, which could be a surprise. Georgia is participating in the European Championship for the first time, with Napoli player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia among others, and thus arrives without great expectations.

  • Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen: Georgia – Portugal
  • Volksparkstadion in Hamburg: Czech Republic – Turkey

What happens after the group stage?

A total of 16 teams will advance to the next round. The top two teams from each group, the group winner and the runner-up, will advance immediately. For the remaining 4 spots, the third-placed teams will be compared, and the best 4 of those teams will also advance. The round of 16 will be played from Saturday, June 29 to Tuesday, July 2.
