Club Brugge can secure a spot in the next round of the revamped Champions League tonight against Juventus. The Farmers need at least one point to be almost certain of advancing, and with a trip to Manchester City ahead, they can’t afford to delay. Juventus, as a big name, has underperformed and hopes to fight its way into the top eight.
Club Brugge vs. Juventus
History can inspire Brugge. Nearly 50 years ago, in 1978, Club Brugge eliminated the Italian powerhouse in the semifinals of the European Cup I. Former national coach Georges Leekens was one of the players on the field at the time. Overall, the Farmers have faced Juventus five times in the Champions League, but all matches ended in victories for the Old Lady.
The most recent encounters between the two teams were in the 2005-2006 season during the Champions League group stage. Juventus initially led with two goals, but 19-year-old Jeanvion Yulu-Matondo scored a consolation goal for Brugge. In the Delle Alpi, Juventus’ then-home stadium, it took until the final 10 minutes for Juventus to break through the Brugge defense.
Club Brugge
This West Flemish club was founded on November 13, 1891, and holds registration number 3. It has played continuously in Belgium’s top division, the Jupiler Pro League, since 1959. Among the two Bruges-based teams, Cercle Brugge and Club Brugge, the latter is the most successful and popular. Club Brugge has won 18 national championships, second only to RSC Anderlecht in Belgium. The team has also claimed the most domestic cups and supercups in Belgian football history. Club Brugge is the only Belgian club ever to have played in the European Cup I final (now the Champions League).
Whether they can repeat such success this year remains uncertain. While Brugge is having a strong season—they are currently in second place in the Jupiler Pro League and performing well in the Champions League—the competition is fierce. In the next round, they could face powerhouses like Bayern Munich, Barcelona, or Liverpool. To advance, the Farmers need more points. After their surprising win against Sporting Lisbon, they realized nine points wouldn’t suffice. Now it seems even ten might fall short. A draw or victory tonight should ensure a minimum of 11 points, enough to progress.
Club Brugge is expected to field Christos Tzolis in the attack. The Greek forward is the most efficient player at the West Flemish club, scoring 12 goals in 32 matches. Other key players include Gustaf Nilsson, Andreas Skov Olsen, and Hans Vanaken, each with eight goals this season.
Juventus
Founded on November 1, 1897, Juventus FC is one of Italy’s oldest football clubs. The Old Lady plays home matches at the Allianz Stadium in Turin. Juventus is one of the few European giants to have won all three major UEFA competitions. I Bianconeri (the white and blacks) have secured 36 national titles, 15 Italian Cups, and 12 international trophies. They are the current Italian Cup holders, but their last international title dates back to 1999.
Juventus has already secured a playoff spot with 11 points, currently ranking 14th in the competition. They are at least three points ahead of teams like Dinamo Zagreb, sitting just inside the playoff cutoff. However, Juventus wants to solidify its status as an Italian top club and secure a direct ticket to the next round, requiring at least one more victory.
The player with the most goals for Juventus is Dušan Vlahović, who has scored 12 goals in 24 matches. Other notable names include Kenan Yildiz, Nico González, and Belgian talent Samuel Mbangula. Mbangula previously played for Club Brugge but didn’t break through there. He later joined Juventus via Anderlecht.
